I have recently paid the VRT on car brought in from the North. I have paid the tax and insurance and have the letters to say this. Just waiting for the actual discs in the post.........is car ok to drive while waiting for the discs to arrive? I have paper to prove I have paid for it all and it's on the way. Thanks.

Don't you have to get the tax disc from the tax office? Using a special form from the NCTS?

Yes. You are able to produce proof of both tax and insurance. If you are stopped you may need to produce both insurance certificate and tax disk at the station when you get them though.

Also curious why the motor tax office didnt just give you a tax disk. They did for me when I duty paid mine.

He wouldn't have a PIN though... would he? Plus you have to show the VRT receipt.

You definitely can't be done for driving without tax or insurance as you have them.

AFAIR it's mentioned in the act, that you don't need to display your insurance disc for first 10 days from the date you obtained policy (this is the grace period to make sure you get your disc).

But I don't think there is something like that with tax disc.

So if you meet some utter guards, he might issue a 60€ penalty for not displaying tax disc.

    I'd take a risk.

    PS. what about NCT?

    Yes he would.
If you go to motor tax website, you can see on their main page, that you can tax a freshly imported vehicle online

Just to point out......I'm a SHE! :-) I was able to tax it online as when you get the VRT, the pin number you use is just the last 6 digits of the chassis number.

I often heard this story of having to go to the tax office to get tax. In the days before online I always used to do it by post ,never have I been to the tax office to do it.

    Indeed he can

Failure to display tax disc and failure to display insurance dics are separate offences to failure to pay tax or insurance.

Just came across this on citizensinformation.ie

"It is an offence to drive without paying motor tax, so you should not drive until you have received confirmation that the registration has occurred and you have paid the motor tax."

I have confirmation of tax paid and registration so maybe I would be ok until disc arrives.

You will be ok driving but not parked. A traffic warden will give you a ticket for non display of tax which you will have to pay or go to court to sort out.

I answered your question earlier in more detail. All you are risking is 60€ fine for not displaying tax disc.

    Doesn't make any difference.
In both cases she can get 60€ fine.

And that's exactly what I said.
She can't be done for driving without tax or insurance as she has them.
But she can be done for not displaying tax disc.

You implied that it was ok and that they were not at risk of doing anything with possible reproach. Clearly that is not the case. (Although you'd have to find a right pig of a TC that would do you for non display if you had the reciepts)

I always get confirmation of ins. by fax or email, I have experience of cockups by ins.comps. in the past.

I think you read someone else's post. Not mine.

I explained everything in details, stating exactly what risks were.

I never said anything like you stated here:
ou implied that it was ok and that they were not at risk of doing anything with possible reproach.
