Self employed rep - out of work

    For the past 6 months I have been working as a self employed sales rep. In September I done very well but as each month went on it got worse. I finally left the job last week. As I was promised full employment by the company I didn't pay tax. I was initially on a 3 month trial which dragged out.

    I was paying my own fuel etc. and have keep the receipts. I was on 20% commission on the first 5,000 each month and 25% thereafter.

    I was wondering how this will affect me applying for social welfare (which i was previously on). Can/should I pay any tax (if any) i owe before I apply for the dole?

    Any help or advice would be great.

    Self employed people are entitled tosome jobseeker's allowance depending on their means. They work out your average income from self employed work over a 12 month period, deduct allowable business expenses from that figure (petrol costs are included in this, as are other business expenses) and then divide the net figure by 52 to get a weekly average. This is then subtracted from the personal JSA rate of 188 per week and also subtracted is the standard means test (which basically looks at your assets and income of a spouse) and you arrive at a final weekly figure.

    I don't know about paying tax off. I suppose it would be no harm if you can submit an expected tax payment early to Revenue because 1) the tax liability exists in any case and if you have the cash to pay it now it guarantees you will avoid not having it later and 2) it diminishes your current cash reserves which increases the level of JSA you may be entitled to.

    Cheers mate, I think I will visit my local tax office and get that sorted first before applying for social welfare

    Were you on JSB or JSA previously? If you had enough contributions in 2009 you may be entitled to JSB as if is more than 6 months since you had a JSB claim then 2009 contributions will kick in. I would go to my local sw office and apply for jobseekers... if its jsa your entitled to that is means tested and takes some time so I would get the wheels in motion and when you are called for means you can explain to the social welfare inspector that x amount of money is owing to revenue if that is the case.
