If somebody on JSA gets one day's work (eg working as poll staff on election day) is this worth their while or will they have to sign off the dole and back on again and go through a means test again?

One day's work is unlikely to bring the person outside of JA eligibility. Their income for that day will be assessed (with appropriate disregards), as long as the person is still available for work 3 days out of 6 (and don't earn too much), they won't have to sign off.

this explains how it works http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/ja_inc_insuremp.aspx

Even if you had to sign off, when you sign on, your claim will be linked to your old claim as long as there hasn't been a 12 month gap. In most circumstances it pays to work, at least as far as JA is concerned, although when you take into consideration medical card and rent supplement, if the person is getting these, that's when sometimes it wouldn't be worth their while.

You just phone your SW office and tell them you have a days work. They stop your payment for that day and put you back on the following day. You won't have your payment, rent allowance or medical taken from you, just your dole for that day.

Yeah, i think barfly's right, i was only making the point in general, for one day's work, no need to worry about medical card or rent supplement, but just let them know the situation, you might lose a bit from your rent supplement for the week, but that's the height of it.

If its working at the poll i doubt losing a days dole or a little rent supplement will be a big deal anyway, thats a gravy train i'd love to be boarding!

    Fingers crossed!

I applied for it the day Cowen announced the election the first time (for 25th March) and got a call yesterday checking my availability.
