I am thinking of buying a new diesel. I want a car that is reliable and will give good mpg. I have narrowed it down to three. Any opinions?

Citroen C5 Tourer is currently better value than the 3008 and has the same engine. Better spec too - factory fitted Sat Nav as standard.

    eh...

Qashqai - have never driven one but know someone who recently drove one and they said it was terrible. Go drive one yourself anyway though!

Peugeot - exceeded my expectations, nice build quality and seems to be a solid car. 1.6 isn't powerful enough IMO.

Skoda - Don't think anyone on boards has a negative thing to say about the new superb but I'll take the brave leap. There's a massive difference between the entry model and the top spec version, even how they feel as cars. Wasn't very impressed with the entry and again, 1.6 is not powerful enough for the size of the car. Bucket loads of room in em though.

Have you looked at buying a year or 2 old? I know you want scrappage but that's not even that much anymore.

I drive a Superb , but out of those 3 ,I'd pick the Peugeot.
105hp is too small for the Skoda

If you're considering a Qashqai then why not also have a look at the Skoda Yeti. Its cheaper than the Qashqai and better spec'd. Having said that, from the three you've listed the residuals will be better on the Qashqai and Superb than on the Peugeot

I recently sat in a superb, and I was extremely impressed. However, that was a top spec 2.0 model, rather than a basic 1.6. How the two compare I couldn't tell you.

I am in the same boat and I am ordering the Skoda Superb this week. I am going for the Elegance model and its coming in at 25,500 with the scrappage. RRP is around the 30k mark. The 10 ones are selling at around 28k.
I have taken it out a few times for a test drive and find that it is a bit under powered but it has enough to over take and cruise the roads in style and comfort

Do you need a car the size of a whale Superb? That's a big car for a little 1.6 diesel, which will hurt the mpg. How about a Mini Cooper D, list €22,360 before scrappage?

    Get yourself a Skoda Yeti.

Or drop a couple of years and get something fancier.

Get the non french option. Always.

The boot in the Yeti is pretty small. The Peugeot is the biggest.

I have looked at buying a 09/10 but the scrappage prices seem pretty good. You would pay the best part of 20k for an 09 superb and they are 1.9L with 302 tax

    Me @rse.
09 selling for 2k under LIST price of a new one.
On that basis you should do well in 2 years time. You'll surely sell it for more than you paid now

    Drove all three today.

My wife likes the Qashai and I like the Superb.

I can show you the quote I got and on Thursday I can show you the order. I had a quick look carzone and a 2010 reg is selling for around 28k. Check yourself.

The new 1.6 engine is replacing the 1.9 and has them same power. You can go for the 2l version but you won't get scrappage because its in tax band C 302 euro. Scrappage is only available on cars in tax band A and B.

I have done my home work on it and have the facts. @colm_mcm just wondering what info you have on the subject

You altered your post from saying 09 to 10. He rightly corrected you when saying that an 09 is still worth only 2k under list yet you come back saying you have all the info and question his knowledge!

I've priced new Superbs and know what you can get them for without scrappage. I also worked in the motor trade to know that asking 28k and getting 28k are two completely different things.

I've driven the Golf both in 1.9 and 1.6 TDI guises, and while they're the same on paper, the 1.9 is way more usable and nicer to drive, despite not being that refined. I've driven the Greenline 1.9 Superb whej they were launched and concluded that the 2.0 is the way to go.

I will conclude by suggesting that you get your 1.6 Superb for 25,500 then put it on carzone for 28000 thus effectively undercutting those with 10 (you originally said 09 reg) regs and see how long it'll take to sell.

I sure did alter it and I have put it in the comments. My fault.

The Superb Elegance without scrappage is around the 30k mark and obviously 28k is asking price ( I never said you would get 28k for it)

I drove both the 1.9 and the 1.6 Octavia and could find no difference. I am no driving expert but I couldn't tell the difference

Bottom line is its a great deal. The VW Passat Highline is about 1k more and has none of the extras like bluetooth, parking sensors, leather interior etc etc and it's smaller. If you ad the extras that the Superb has there is no comparison

I looked into 2 out of those cars and a few others but in the end went with the garage that gave me the best trade in for my car , some garages i'd burn the car first before i'd give it to them  but i'm delighted with my Astra :D

Just reading some reviews about the Qashqai. They seem to have a problematic history 07 - 09 with a poor handbrake and lots of rattles and being a bit unstable.

Does anyone know if these are sorted on the new cars?

My Wife wants the Qashqai and I want the Superb.

She likes the seats and extra height

How do I convince her that the Superb is much better.

Tell her its basically a renault. Check out the motors section for inspiration on horror stories.

The Qashqai is a safer caqr for children than the Superb so if you care about your children go for the Qashqai. It might save there lives.

Both cars score the maximum 40 points for child safety.
