Trusses on drive shaft problem-Avensis

I have an 05 Avensis, 91,000 km at present, bought particularly for reliability and thought I wouldn't have to spend much on it bar routine service etc. Over last week there has been a terrible noise when I start the engine but only when using the clutch at same time. Once it's running, it stops. Brought to garage today and told (excuse spelling etc as I know next to nothing about cars) due to bearings on trusses? on the crank shaft worn down or broken allowing crank shaft to move and hence the noise. Mechanic said would not expect to see this problem in this age of car. He will need to take engine out to get at the bearings, shaft etc and see if any damage. Looking like a big and expensive job so just wondering if anyone has had or heard of similar? Dreading how much it's going to cost ... Thanks

Perhaps he said "Thrust Bearing" but it could also be the clutch release bearing. Is it a grinding/rumbling noise every time you press the clutch?
The release bearing would be a smaller job imo, on most cars it involves taking the gearbox out but leaving the engine in place. A thrust bearing on the crankshaft would be a bigger job I think and may require taking out the engine.

A clutch release bearing is a thrust bearing though, and probably what is wrong.

Shouldn't happen after 91k kms in a fit. Try talking to Toyota if you have had the car from new.

Have you had the clutch replaced recentley? If he said its engine out its no doubt a thrust bearing , The limit the endplay in the crankshaft, cost feck all but are in the heart of the engine.
Usually caused by people riding the clutch or a poorly adjusted throw out, as the plunger for the clutch pushes off the nose of the crank.

This is probably what toyota will say, as at 91K the only other issue I can think of would be a manufacturing problem, with either the tolerances out or the Bearing may have been misalighne with the oil holes.

Does the clutch make a creaking sound when it's depressed OP or is it something much worse?

(I'm sorry for being a little selfish because mine does that at the moment and am just curious as to whether it is something that's a nuiscance or something more serious)

Anyway, OP it could be your gearbox as well - they are a common problem in earlier Avensis' (Avensi?), along with the VVTis burning copious quantites of oil at higher mileage.

Indeed it is a type of thrust bearing, and is likely to be the fault.
However the description given in the OP seems to refer to a crankshaft thrust bearing, hence I made the distinction between it and the clutch release bearing.

I hope the mechanic was describing a 'worst case' scenario for whatever reason. I presume a clutch replacement on the Avensis can be done in-situ by dropping the gear box out so that's the first thing I'd have checked before considering pulling the engine out.

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to reply. As I'm clueless about cars and engines it's good to know it's not a totally unknown problem. Mechanic doesn't think the part itself should be too expensive unless but a lot of time and labour involved in removing engine. Anybody any idea what kind of money we might be talking? Most likely won't have car for four or five days so I'll have to borrow my sister's car. Someone asked about the type of noise, it sounds screeching/grinding, but it only lasts when turning engine on and releasing the clutch. If I leave the car in neutral when I park it doesn't happen when I restart, I just have always left car in 1st when stopping engine. Either way, it'll have to be fixed, it's just the cost that's worrying me. We only have it since August 09 so year warranty is up. Bought it hoping to have worry free motoring for a few years when money so tight! Thanks for all your replies.
