Speedometer not working

My girlfriend was driving home today from college and her speedometer decided to die on her so she didn't know what speed she was doing. It's not registering any speed at all when we took it for a spin around the estate. Also, the petrol gauge in the car is constantly going up and down at the same time the speedometer went.

Would anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong?

You will have to provide make, model and year of the car before anyone can start guessing.

just guessing but in a wide range of makes this is frequently caused by the voltage stabilizer in the back of the instrument cluster

I have a 01 VW Golf 1.4L and yesterday the speedometer started acting up. It's reading about 15mph too high and comes to rest at 15mph(instead of zero). Has anyone any ideas what could cause this? And would it be something most mechanics would be able to resolve? Might be a silly question, but will this affect the digital overall mileage reading also? Thanks.
