I have an 06 1.4 petrol ford focus, 51000km, recently had 4 new tyres put on the car, soon after the powertrain light came on, i took to the garage and they ran the diagnostics and said they re was nothing wrong, today driving home, the car last all power and all the warning lights came on, the car lost power and laboured, i tried to drive home from work and the car would nt start, no lights would come on. I have taken the car 3 times to the mechanic and he said there is nothing wrong, please help, what could be wrong. thanks

when your car doesnt start is the 4 horizontal lines across the bottom of your digital display on your speedo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 143 ✭✭behan29

yes, when the powertrain light comes on so do all the other warning lights, the horizontal lines appear also.

Intermittent speed sensor fault on one of the wheels?

The cable could have been damaged by the tyre fitter.

Thanks i hope it is something simple, as soon as i got the new tyres on the car the powertrain light came on. Thank you very much

If the car is displaying warning lights then there had to be stored fault code(s) somewhere. If the dealer is not using the Ford IDS diagnostic tool then it is likely that whatever he is using cannot resolve the fault code(s) stored. This is something I have come across myself and I either use a bespoke Ford scan tool or get the car scanned by a mate in a Ford main dealer.

On the face of it, "Powertrain" in Ford speak relates to engine and gearbox. It is possible that its related to the tyre change, but you won't know for definite until the fault codes are properly read.

**EDIT: Check that the garage has fitted the same size tyres on all four wheels ;)

I have had the car on a diagnostic too; twice and nothing showed up, i havent gone to the ford dealer where i live as he is a crook and his garage has a dreadful reputation, i did take the car to a registered peugeot dealer and he has said there is no problems found, obviousily there is.

The Peugeot software (I think it's called Planet) has a facility to read to generic EOBD codes (those between P0001 and P0999) of any car. Ford specific codes between P1000 and upwards are very hard to read by any scan tool which doesn't have Ford-specific software on it, and this applies to the Peugeot. I'd bet it that your car does not have a code in the EOBD range and that's why the Peugeot scan tool drew a blank. I've had it before where a Ford car was in limp mode and displaying all sorts of dire errors on the dashboard. However there was no engine management light on, and scans using non Ford-specific scan tools, showed no codes. But using a proper high-end scan tool was a different story and there were codes aplenty.

Perhaps you might consider bringing the car to another Ford dealer, or suss locally if there is a reputable diagnostics outfit that has a suitable scan tool to resolve the manufacturer codes to which I'm referring.

Do you have proper diagnostic equipment or will you base your diagnosis on what the dash is telling you??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭ford jedi

yes we do have diagnostic equipment, we have ids and and about half dozen other computers and life time of ford experience so its not just guess work , and the guy who opened the thread we contacted , to help out but sadly were no where near him, but said we,d double check it any time he was passing .

You seem very certain that you know what the problem is, so would you care to share your opinions with us?

Why bother even coming on and posting in the Thread, a help thread, if your not gonna help. The Guy clearly needs help and he can hardly drive to another county for you to check it if the cars fúcked.

If your so sure of your self just let the guy know for christ sake.

It will cost you absolutely nothing to tell the guy.

In future don't bother your hole coming in asking the OP questions about his problem if you've no intention of giving him a solution.

It bothered me you wouldn't help the guy out when you clearly knew what it was. We help people out in here.

Its not eating me at all what the problem is as it can't benefit me in the slightest. But I work on maybe 10 cars everyday out on the road and know how stressful it can be for someone to be having a reoccurring problem with a car that cant be solved.

And if that your particular area of expertise (fords) why not even PM the guy to save him a lot of hassle/money when it costs you absolutely nothing?

+1. There's nothing worse than seeing someone suffering with a car that's cost them a fortune to buy and maintain and still it defies being fixed.

My sentiments exactly, however this is starting to smell like a piss take.

I got a PM off someone this morning about this thread. The only thing I can think of now is the 3 amp fuse, purple one under the bonnet could have blown. Its got nothing to do with the wheels or ABS. Could also be the immobiliser. The engine managment light could of been put on for any reason. can you pm me your number im in kilkenny also. Maybe be able to help.

@Fordjedi, can you at least pm me what your on about, you do 1/2 a dozen a week yet I have not seen these kind of symptoms before on a Focus and we had a very busy past month. cheers.
