Not sure if it has been covered.

Is it forbidden for a uniformed Garda to have a beard?

If yes are the Garda the only European police force that forbids uniformed officers with beards?

Beards not allowed, unless special permission is obtained form teh commissioner..
permission would only be obtained following advice of a doctor.

basically.. shaving would have to cause you medical harm in order to be allowed have a beard.

(or for operational reasons that cant be discussed)

What's the reasoning behind it? Just a visual, 'smartness' thing?

I'd imagine mainly for the sake of uniformity, but also because it would give some rapscallion an unnecessary handhold should fisticuffs break out.

Is there some connection in having a goatee and cocaine use?

Yes it is, however why certain members wear beards for certain reasons will not, and cannot be discussed......for operational reasons
