I was wondering if there is a good open source alternative to Microsoft Project? I was thinking about familiarising myself with project management software and wondered are there some open source alternatives that are widely used?

I've used OpenProj previously for small Gantt charts.

Takes a bit of getting used to but there are some decent tutorials on the web for it.

OpenProj is handy to read an MS Project file someone sends you,but I haven't found it useful for actually PMwork because it is another one of those open source projects that have limited "community" version but once you try doing anything serious it requires you purchase their "enterprise" version. :(
So if you require resource levelling for example, there is none in the community edition... so it'sok to make an initialplan but it doesn't allow you easily manage a project.
Mind yu I found MSproject very buggy in this respect too.

The best PM app I know is not quiet a MSProject replacement.

At first glance it seems a little bit technical, bit as a developer this is not an issue for me but I can imagine it might be for others. But it does work very well and after using it for a while I found the approach, while less point & click, to be very powerful.

    The project is TaskJuggler http://www.taskjuggler.org/

Anyway, I have found it to be very good but I have not tackled very large projects that I have previously with MS Project...but anyway...worth a look I think.
