Why do you want a Dell?
They are pretty average, not as bad as HP, but pretty over priced.

Mr Xiney bought a Dell last year... would not recommend.

Track pad is a POS and the screen is showing signs of giving up the ghost and it hasn't even been a year. Next time we're going for a Samsung, I think.

(We had HP laptops before and never again with those either!)

^^^Get an asus or toshiba, they're quite reliable....the most reliable iirc.

@OP, pcworld did stock dell computers last time I was there - some months ago

PC World have a very big selection of the latest models in stock, to be fair a friend of mine bought one and never had a problem you can be unlucky with any make of laptop. we have all Dell where I work and no problems.

As much as it pains me to say, I would say go for a HP. Just take the HP Software off it, I just find it annoying.

Toshiba use to be the top dog but have taken a slide the last few years.
Acer are ok for the price but not that great.
Dell, they use cheap parts yet charge a fortune to replace them

Not really, why do you say that?

And you recommended a HP, one of the most unreliable brands - why?

For reference, although it's a little over a year old: http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/laptops/asus-and-toshiba-make-most-reliable-laptops-651331

I'd never advice ANYONE to ever buy a HP.
They have terrible build quality and are one of the worst life expectancies of any branded machine.

On top of that they STILL haven't admitted to the Nvidea defect that plaged about 3 generations of the Pavilion series.

    Avoid HP, whatever you do.

If you want a reliable machine buy an Asus or a Lenovo.

I have two dell laptops sitting in my kitchen belonging to other people that are both dead and under two years old. I've had to try and fix many more for people. They're also overloaded with crap software the machine is incapable of running.

Dell used to be a great company making solid PCs for business ever since they went more into the consumer market they just went to shyte.

They seem to have fairly good selections in the shops around Galway and prices are fairly good from what I've seen. If I was you I'd head over to the Laptop forums and ask them what type of laptop you should get because I'm absolutely sure you'll get a better laptop than anything dell has to offer.

I've liked the newer HP Laptops. Never liked them before. And absolutely hate their intrusive software that comes with them and with their printers. Always remove it. They seem to have made their HP laptops more like the Compaq machines which were always very reliable and sturdy. I honestly couldn't fault their new range of laptops. Well except on price!!!

Dell, like the other poster said have gone to the dogs. Toshiba seem to have gone to hell too.

Asus, I have very limited experience with about a year ago. Didn't get too much use out of it. Plus it had a solid state drive, no CD/DVD and was one of the mini ones..hate those as it is!

Never used a Lenovo I must say so can't comment on that...would be interested to see it.

    Sony laptops are junk.

Compaq laptops are great reliability, good performance but usually clunky and ugly as muck!

Ah come on, this is like saying a car is junk because of the colour. And for the record certain models of Sony VAIO are fantastic, but you have to know your components.

OP, it's irrelevant the brand, it's what's under the hood and what the hood is made out of is important. Befrend the folks over in the Laptops forum and learn about build quality and components to suit your needs (Better graphics card if you want to play games, better battery life if you want to be on the move, better processor/more ram for speed, etc)
A dell with good build quality with good components is just as good as another with the same spec.
A laptop is an investment, learn a little about them before you buy. Or prepare to be fleeced regardless of where you shop.

Oh and yes, PC world and Currys sell Dell.

That's true I guess. Going from this people all have different opinions. Whatever you get just keep it clean. Maintain it properly and short of a hardware fault it will perform well. Hate when people give off that their machine is slow when it has 4Gb of RAM and a Dual Core Processor. Then you look at it and there's loads of startup applications, malware etc.

Would not recommed buying a laptop from Pc World, especially if something goes wrong and you have to deal with there tech guys, very bad customer service.

Ya, I wouldn't buy Dell. If you insist, you absolutely have to get the extended warranty. They seem like disposable computers to me. My mate loves dell, but he's always using the warranty. What he loves is the warranty really, as when the machines fail he has so far usually ended up with upgraded replacements.

Toshiba have a great reputation although I've never owned one. In this internet age I don't recall reading any prevailing and/or significant negativity regarding them - and that is hard to achieve.

Sony are crooks, and the after-sales service is criminal. My experience is that their VAIOs are **** and start to die at the 1 yr mark. Never again. And they're loaded with proprietary bull****.

I own a Samsung N110 which has been a great 'does exactly what it says on the tin' experience so far, over a year old, no sign of any build issues and the only proprietary stuff is a few apps that create backups, control graphics settings, power settings. Sensible stuff, not too much of it, and very easy to disable.

Macbook, they can run windows these days as well as OSX. The build quality, from my experience, is aces but you need to get the extended warranty. Repairs are expensive if you don't DIY it, and if you get a unit that will need repair...you'll be glad you got the warranty. I got a 2nd hand iBook G4 that's like, 5 yrs old or more, and still running like a trooper. Although the spec isn't great by today's standards.

If I was on the market for a laptop it would be a shoot-out between macbook/samsung/toshiba.

Sorry, I realise I have not answered OP's question in any way :)

I would recommend Dell, in particular the 15" XPS Model or if you have the money go for one of the Alienware/Dell branded models, good components in general.

    But as other have said:

    (1) You get what you pay for.
    (2) To maintain performance you have to maintain your machine.

Between the extended family, we've bought 5 Dell laptops over the past 3.5 years.
    All have gone faulty.
My own (Inspiron 1720) one has just been repaired for the 5th time (2 x graphics card, 1 motherboard, 1 wireless lan card, 1 hard drive).
Another (Studio 15) has had 2 dvd drives replaced, and the 2nd one has recently failed again out of warranty.
The 1745 was delivered with a faulty screen (repaired), and since then has needed 2 hard drives.
The xps has needed 1 new graphics card, 3 motherboards, 2 powersupplies, and a battery which only lasted 7 months.
The last one (1521) just needed a screen replaced.

As a previous poster said, you will need an extended warranty if you buy a dell.

Also, they put the fan intake on the bottom, which clogs up after a couple of years and frequently causes overheating issues.

Dells are and have always been awful. They just happen to have an excellent business model and serve the commercial world very well, from a managers point of view anyway.

I'd seriously advise against getting a Dell, I've never bought one but I have had to fix so many broken ones in the past I never will.
They are built poorly and cheaply and backed up by poor customer service from a consumer point of view.

Asus are the best for the money these days in my opinion

Since you got suggestions on where to buy I'll move this to laptops now for the discussion of the merits of various brands.

I have to say I'm surprised at Dell getting such a bad rap from people.

Over the last 15 years my family has had three different desktops and two laptops and we've never had issues with them that we didn't cause ourselves. Maybe we've just been lucky? Their warranty used to be great but in recent years they've started charging extra for what used to be standard (as I recall). Price-wise they are competitive but I would agree with Wompa1. Whatever computer you do buy the first thing you should do once you get it home is reinstall the OS so that all the pre-loaded garbage is wiped.
