97 amlera not running right

I have the 1997 almera and for the last while it has been running rough. Starts perfect and idle`s perfect. When driving though it is very sluggish and jumpy and as you accelerate it actually dies away a bit unless i put the accelerator right to the floor almost. After a while of driving it might improve to almost normal.

The temp gauge on dash shows the coolant temp is way lower than it should be while driving which made me think the coolant stat was stuck open, but i would`t expect that to make it run that bad. Maybe the coolant temp probe is faulty. Or throttle chamber/throttle position sensor?

If the car is left at idle to warm up after starting it drives better then. Any suggestions?

    Water pump or head gasket?

The thing that made me think its neither of them is the engine is actually showing as too cool while driving according to the temp gauge on dash, that made me wonder is the coolant thermostat stuck open or the coolant temp sensor is faulty.

The head gasket i considered also, but as it sometimes runs fine especially if i let it warm up before driving, i felt its probably not that. No sign of gases or oil going into the coolant either.

Its like its having a fuel problem. Maybe a faulty coolant temp sensor might cause it? Or throttle position sensor on the throttle chamber or something like that. I have not done too much looking yet anyway.

A sure sign of a faulty thermostat is cold air from the heater rad inside the car.

Yes true. The air does not get completely cold but does cool down a fair bit compared to when car is left at idle and not moving. And the temp gauge does move up to normal when the car is not moving with no air through rad, and fan comes on then too, all this suggests the thermostat is staying open. But i would not of thought that would cause it to run so bad on its own. Although if the coolant is actually way too cool when driving, the coolant temp sensor maybe then affects how the engine is running through the ECU?

If the coolant temp sensor was faulty then you would expect the car heating to be normal alright. I assume this coolant sensor has some input to the ECU for cold starting and running.
