Allegedly, some Chinese companies produce fake rice by mixing in plastic. This fake rice is then "massively sold" on the Chinese market.

Fake rice sold in Taiyuan, Shaanxi is made from a mixture of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plastic, according to the report.

It's probably leftover bits of plastic.

You can't fault their recycling efforts.

If you consider the fact that it takes about five barrels of oil to grow a cow from calf to beefburger, it's not that surprising.

Mooooving swiftly along, it's the same in all modern farming for every one calorie (or Kjoule) of food energy produced, about six* of oil are used in the production

*between 4 & 10 depends which article you read.

There's fake food all around us, packed with preservatives and additives, plastic is just another one to add to the list really.

If you want to avoid fake foods, go for organic wholefoods, fruit and vegetables.

In the good old days (1900) they used to put sawdust and rice into bread.

Almost all pet food contains ash because it's a cheap bulking agent.

Supermacs allegedly use beef in their burgers.

    I'm yet to be convinced.

Japanese have a whole fake food industry! But only for show.
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fake food samples in a display case.Fake food samples appear prevalently in the windows and display cases of food-serving establishments throughout Japan. They are usually made out of plastic. The plastic models are mostly handmade and carefully sculpted to look like the actual dishes. The models are custom-tailored to restaurants and even common items such as ramen will be modified to match each establishment's food. During the molding process, the fake ingredients are often chopped up and combined in a manner similar to actual cooking.

The craftsmanship has been raised to an art form and plastic food has been exhibited at places such as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Regular competitions are held in making fake food dishes out of plastic and other materials.

The plastic food manufacturers fiercely guard their trade secrets as business is lucrative; the plastic food industry in Japan, by conservative estimates, has revenues of billions of yen per year. A single restaurant may order a complete menu of plastic items costing over a million yen.

In recent years, Japanese plastic food manufacturers have been targeting markets overseas, such as China.

wow... never knew japan had that.

Probably only a matter of time before that becomes a western thing too. I mean every place likes to show pictures of their food. Half of the dishes shown dont even look like what you get one bit.

Eww! I better be careful when I'm visiting these places.

Perhaps it is a communist conspiracy to lace the rice with plastic so all the Chinese will grow big plastic boobs. :D:D

Got chatting to my father about food photography (he was a photographer, not of food though). One of the tricks he was telling me was to use cigarette smoke to make the food look hot and steaming.
The dishes in the pictures look like the food you get in the same way a model looks like the photoshopped version that ends up in a magazine.

At least with the plastic food everyone knowns it's a fake plastic display model. :)

Another one was a tampon soaked in water, microwaved and placed innocuously behind the food. Courtesy of my lovely Home Economics teacher back in the day.
