Windows 7 - Hidden files issue

Hey lads, i'm stuck big time!

I was trying to display Hidden Folders/files to access an appdata folder under C:\Users\username\appdata. (it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2)

Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.

I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders (so so so stupid out of me!)

I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same.

When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.

Can anyone help me get back to the way it was pleeeeeeeeeease???

First thing I would do is reinstall the graphics card driver and try and sort out the issue with ATI Catalyst Software.. ...

folders in windows 7 enherit their properties from the folder above them.

    e.g if you had this

    folder1/items/games/stuff

    and you made games hidden.

everything in games including stuff would become hidden.
make sure your selecting the right folder to un-hide.

In folder options you can tick the box to show hidden files

Not sure if system restore will undo those changes, worth a try ;)

You need to be an administator to change the permissions on other users folders

    :D

Brilliant stuff OP: You made your Users folder Hidden, which is doing a number on anything that required files from the folder to run, and its subfolders. And a lot of stuff is in your users folders: downloads, pictures, music, desktop, etc.

Simple fix, you have to go back and find the properties page for \\users and unselect hidden, apply, and reboot.

Theres a big difference between "Hidden" and "Show Hidden" :pac:

You weren't even in the right screen: You don't view hidden files by going to the properties of a folder like that. Instead you go to Start>"Folder Options"> and in the View Tab hit the Radio button "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives". This is what you wanted to do in the first place, and this is what you're going to have to do, probably, to find your Users folder again.
