'02 VW Passat 1.6L Petrol Wet Weather Problems

    Hi,

I've had an issue with my 2002 1.6L Passat (Trendline) for a couple of years. If the car has been left out during a particularly wet day, it's very sluggish afterward, accompanied by lots of exhaust smoke. Today I had a particularly bad example when the car cut out at a traffic light and when it eventually did get going again, the exhaust smoke was phenomenal, accompanied by the usual sluggishnes / chugging along. After a few minutes and when I get up to higher gears, it's OK again. One other point to add is that the engine management / check engine light comes on when this problem occurs but it disappears again shortly afterwards so I've never brought it in to a garage to get it put on diagnostics.

I did some searching on the web and it looks very like a coilpack issue - e.g. see http://gti-vr6.net/library/engine/fixing_cracked_coiled_pack.html). I am aware that there is a coil pack issue on VWs but in relation to this issue with the Passat, I was under the impression from what I've seen that it was only the 1.8T i.e. not the 1.6. As far as I can see, there is a recall that covers this issue but that may be only for the 1.8T. I actually got the coilpacks fixed a couple of years ago ( I don't remember if it was just one or all of the coilpacks he repaired - he used some kind of sealant as far as I know similar to what's described in the weblink above) but the problem appears to have returned so I'm not sure if this means it's not a coilpack issue or maybe one or all of the coilpacks could have cracked again.

So -any thoughts on whether this is a coilpack issue? If so, is it covered by any existing product recall (i.e. fix it for free :D) or indeed any ideas on something else it could be or how I should proceed? I've had a few people take a look at this but without joy ... invariably when it happens, it's a weekend or there's some other reason I can't get to a garage, and obviously it's more difficult to troubleshoot without diagnostics error codes and when it's not happening "there and then".

    Thanks,
    super_freddie.
