Would love to know if any of the running candidates have a view to share on the regulation/legalisation etc of marijuana...?

Ok, I'm all for legalisation of marajuana but let's be honest, there's a million more pertinent issues in this election than that. Bizarre.

considering the possible money that can be made i think its an important question to be asking.

I nearly broke down when I heard that nonsense the other night, we are not going to wipe out our enormous debt this way.

Btw i'm all for legalising marajuana for medical reasons only.

i highly doubt that it could wipe out the national debt either but....it could make a few million...employ a few people, save money on legal and prison fees...could do wonders for the health system..

are we not grasping at straws anyway??shouldn't anything that might possibly help be assessed rationally??

I've emailed all Galway-West candidates asking for their views on prohibition and decriminalisation of marijuana.
Will post back here with their replies, if any of them bother...

Maybe for you and maybe not for him. You don't get to decide whats important to others.

For those interested, whether for medical and/or other reasons and think the issue is in fact quite 'pertinent' and not at all 'bizarre', I found this at
    http://irishcannabis.blogspot.com/2011/01/general-elections.html
Here's a list of people in the upcoming elections who favor ending prohibition or who favor medical use only.

    People: Who favor ending prohibition

Luke 'Ming' Flanagan - Current Mayor of Roscommon and cannabis activist - Independent - Roscommon

Emmet Stagg - Sitting TD - Labour - Kildare North

Joe Higgins - Sitting MEP - Socalist Party - Dublin

    Dr.Bill Tormey - Councillor - Fine Gael - Dublin North/West

People: Who support medical use only

    Maureen O'Sullivan - TD - Independent - Dublin Central

Dan Boyle - Senator - Green Party - Cork South Central

Martin Ferris - TD - Sinn Fein - Kerry North

    Parties:

    Socialist Party
    Fis Nua

The last government banned head shops and how many people seemed to think that it was great...

Think about the Joe Duffy show the day after weed is legalised in Ireland:rolleyes:

Unlike marijuana, most headshop drugs had very little research done on them and nothing was known about the long-term effects.

Not that something like that would matter to Joe Duffy, he'd make up a few 'facts' about it killing millions of people, then hear from Mary from the stereo-typical Irish backwater town about how it made her go crazy.

    Just a heads up....
The first phase of the Newstalk YouTube digital debate has now ended and we have received more than 1,700 questions and almost 20,000 votes. Now, it is over to the party leaders.
The 10 most popular questions have been sent to the party leaders who will record a short video response to each.
These video responses will be uploaded on the You Tube channel hosting the digital debate on Friday February 18th and the public will have an opportunity to vote on the best answers between then and February 24th.
Below is the list of the Top 10 most popular questions
    .......

    OTHER ISSUES
Will your party commit to legalising and taxing cannabis for personal use, thereby generating a significant new source of tax revenues, saving Gardai and court resources, and allowing access to those with a medical need?

    Prepare for waffle.
