    Hi all
we have recently experienced a chimney fire, have contacted a couple of companies who's immediate answer is that we need to have the chimney relined, is this the only option, apparently the chimney fire happened due to tar in the chimney, is there any way this can be cleaned without the need to reline the chimney. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

If there was a chimney fire, then the chances are the liner would be cracked, which will result in seepage from the flu into the blocks.

Relining would be the only way to go. Safer anyway

hi if you have had a chimney fire it is not necessarily the case the the clay liners have cracked, the only way to know for sure is to have a cctv survey done, if the survey shows that the chimney is ok then the tar can be removed using our mechanical cleaning sytem, this could be done at a fraction of the cost of relining. If relining is necessary then a flexi flue liner would be the way to go. hope this helps

You would have to remove the tar first to get a good look with the cctv. The liners dont always crack. Depends how bad the fire was. How long it was on fire and the way the chimney was constructed. Soot on fire will burn out in minutes. Tar will burn for hours and the tempature will be higher. General household insurance will cover it if it needs a lining.

thanks for the replies we contacted a company call nationwide chimney solutions they cleaned and removed the tar from the chimney, they called it reaming and then done the cctv survey, luckily the liners were not cracked and the chimney was ok to use there and then. whole thing was only 475euro.
