    FG Cllr Tom Higgins annunced his resignation from the party today, in order to run as an Independent!! The Cllr, who is regarded as a close friend and ally of FG candidate, Sen Paudie Coffey, is set to run as an Independent in the forthcoming general election!!

    p.s. He hasnt a hope in hell!!

    or perhaps feels he has a better chance than and more to offer.

    Big Party politics has been taking a good hammering in recent months and the more I see on the TV the more I'm inclined to think with the smaller such as the independents like Higgins or Halligan.

    Cullen gone, O'Shea gone

    I'd say the smaller parties, independents and the likes of the shinners could be well in with a shout.

    He's probably better known than some of the candidates. His comments about the divide within FG are interesting, not because they tell us anything new, but because the comments are being made publically now.

    true Tom,

    remember Kenny already survived a leadership contest, and of course Deasy did once say he'd contest that although never did.

    Even at a local level in Waterford the divide is clear for all to see. But its not a new thing.

    Be interesting to see if Tom Higgins will still be closely aligned with FG although an independent ala Healy Rae or Finian McGrath

    Wouldn't that be a way for FG to get another seat with two candidates already on the ticket......:p

    I've met Cllr Higgins and one good thing I've seen in the past is that regardless of FG's policies he always pushed for what he thought was right.

    That's just my opinion and I don't do party politics.

    Independents should have better outings this time around.

    I think many people are sick to the teeth of Big Party Politics;
    Fianna Fail - for obvious reasons
    Fine Gael and Labour - bickering like an unhappy couple. Couldnt work, could it?

    It is hard to dissociate the term 'Independent' from the horse-trading that Healy Rae and Lowry were involved in, which was hard to stomach. But it looks like Fine Gael for GE 2011 and it could turn out to be a bit of tyranny if they were given a free hand in it. A number of capable independents (nationwide) might be required to keep an eye on them.

    I have had some dealings with Higgins and would consider him to be a credible alternative.
