Car Engine Query...

    Hey,

I would really appreciate if somebody could tell me what's wrong with my car as I'm not too familiar beyond the basics of car engines.

Basically, the car is running fine but when stopped with the engine on, I can hear this loud noise every 2 seconds. Its very hard to explain the noise its making but it is constant and almost like someone breathing or snoring very loud - in other words a silent second followed by this loud noise each second.

What does this sound like??

Could be a hose with a crack maybe. Are you sure it's from the engine?
Open the bonnet and listen around the engine bay for the noise.

    It's a Volvo s40 1.8

The noise seems to be coming from the engine alright and if not, somewhere above or very close to it.

Is it only when the engine is warmed up? Could it be the fan kicking in and out?

Or if you have air con/climate turned on it could be the compressor.

Yes it actually happens when the engine is warmed up so it could be related to the fan alright. If it is kicking in and out, how do I fix it?

It probably is snoring you can hear. That engine is a right lazy b'tard :D

My old c280 used to make an odd repetitive noise - turned out to be the fuel tank vapour release mechanism. Could be that ?

It's bearings deep in the engine, according to Advance - work they don't carry out apparently.

    How old is it?
I'd get a 2nd opinion, lots of Advance staff aren't mechanics.

There are a number of solenoid actuators on engines which could be reverting back to a neutral position when engine switched off.
