My brother has asked me about a replacement laptop for his ageing Dell and I'm not really up to date on the specifications.

    Budget is about €500.

Two under consideration are this & this. I'm not sure if the i3 machine is better despite the lower RAM?

Any other suggestions to add to the mix? Are Dell still worth consideration or can better be got for the same money these days?

Should also have mentioned it's mainly for general use - MS Office, browsing, etc. There isn't any need to run the latest games or anything like that.

The i3 machine is the better choice imo. 3GB of RAM is plenty, and it's easily upgradable in the future.

Before I go and tell him to look at the i3 machine does anyone else have any input?
