Are you in a flat or apartment that you are renting?
Can you ask the other tenants do they want a better signal?
Will the landlord let you put a tiny contract aerial on the chimney?

You can run two or 3 cables into it to feed the other flats if you solder the connection at the chimney and secure it.
Doing that isn't recommended but it works.
€30 in cable and for the aerial...and you might get a tenners contribution from others.

It certainly isn't recommended. You will get a lot of loss and reflections from the aerial. If you have enough signal a 3 way passive splitter is a much better way to go.

Don't buy an Aerial in Argos or Tesco

These are as good as any, better than most. If one of these doesn't work you need a real one outdoors (or possibly attic).

This Style, many variations. The rods on "rabbits ears" are for VHF. If a loop, it's a very poor UHF aerial. All Digital is on UHF.

The best version easily swivels for H or V and pops together/apart

You may need extension cable to position it best, and maybe 12dB to 18dB amp between aerial and extension if the extension is any length.

Position makes a huge difference indoors.

    Try bargain stores.

Maplin has them at about €12 to €15 Euros which is about x2 over priced.

The one-for-all aerials are especially overpriced fake snake oil.

Got an aerial in Gallagher TV Rathmines and was charged €35 with no attachments or reflector. Had to beg to get it for €35 as it was €40.

Was in B&Q to day and the exact aerial with all attachments and reflector + mounting was €16.95.

Im so sickened that I was so ripped off. I will newer darken their door again.

What kind of aerial, what do you mean 'no reflector'? Post a photo.

If parts are missing take it back.

A reflector is a V or plate shaped piece of metal at the end of an aerial.

I knew the pieces were missing that's why he gave me a bargain at €35!!!!!!!!

Same one in B&Q with all fittings €16.95

Totally ripped off, not bringing it back as it setup in my attic.

Just thought potential boards buyers should be aware

I know what a reflector is, I thought it may have been a log-periodic aerial which has no reflector as such.
Is the one in B&Q the same brand name/quality?

From what I could tell, It was an identical aerial. I cannot comment on brand as I one I bought in Gallagher TV was unbranded and unboxed.

Same size, same material and same number of parasitic elements

Why did you knowingly buy one with missing parts? ('bargain' or not)

The aerial will work perfectly well without the mount or reflector as I am in a strong signal area. I knew that and didnt need the mount

I noted the missing parts just to make the comparison. With the missing parts the aerial would have cost over €40

    Same aerial in B&Q = €16.95

So total rip off, the post is not about me buying it or not, its about the difference in price and to make people aware.

You should really post a photo or look for a brand name (maybe on the dipole JB) before you accuse retailers. B&Q are usually SLX brand, not known for durability.
What 'element count' does the aerial have?

No brand name on the aerial anywhere as I checked when I installed it. As I said same number of parasitic elements as the B&Q one.

    B&Q aerial below:

Im not going up to the attic to take a picture of my one so you going to have to take my word for it.

It pays to shop around, as they say. . .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

Usually the local wholesale gives away aerials with bits missing.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭Peter Rhea

Hmmm . . . if that was the case, rather than the retailer losing or damaging parts himself (those that also install are prone to this), then that was a very profitable transaction . . .

The B&Q site quoted above has something that will really send Watty totally into orbit - "digital ready cable". Maybe that's why here in Bray a long cable with 10cm of outer conductor stripped off actually gives me decent Three Rock reception :) Trouble is, I get cramp holding it by the window...

whats a good indoor aerial for a boat im moored in hazelhatch dublin and got new walker 19 inch tv as a present

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭Peter Rhea

The tv transmission network isn't designed with indoor aerials in mind, but they can provide satisfactory reception in some places.

Something like this or this should have more gain than loop & 'rabbit ears' types.
