    Some USB flash drives have a "lock" on the side which enables a read only mode.

    try this:
    a. Press WINDOW+R keys (this will open RUN box).
    b. Enter gpedit.msc and press OK (this will open LocalGroupPolicyEditor)
    c. go to Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->BitLocker Drive Encription->Removable Data Drives
    d. double click Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker and press Disabled
    e. Click OK and Close all windows, then stick in your USB see if problem still there

    that's same fix trough the registry editor (beware you can easy damage computer with registry editor)

    1. Press WINDOW+R keys (this will open RUN box).
    2. enter regedit
    3. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
    4. Right click on WriteProtect and click modify.
    5. If the value data is 1 change it 0 and click ok.
    12. Close Registry editor

    now you should be able to write into USB

    This happens to a friend of mine. He uses ubuntu. Windows XP pro (at college) often sees his USB sticks as write-protected.
    He just reformats it

    your friend can use fix above to this issue and never again will format his USB stick because of Write protect message
