I bought a car last weekend and the person I bought it off had to send off for the log book, so she is posting it to me today to sign.

The tax in the car is out of date since Nov so really want to get it taxed asap to avoid the hassle. Is there any way i can go to the local motor tax office on Monday with the log book and ask them can I tax it? If i send off the log book i'll be waiting another week before it comes back.

No, but the seller could tax the car for you. Bear in mind that this would require her either paying the back tax or declaring in front of a Garda that the car was off the road from Nov to end Jan.

You can even go to motor tax office yourself with logbook in her name and tax it.
Only thing is that you need her to sign the RF100 (motor tax renewal form) and ask her to sign declaration of no use confirmed by garda.
