How much extra would I expect to pay for petrol in a week to fill up say a Madza 6 or a Ford Focus vs a Mazda RX8?
I dont do a huge amount of driving. Would love an RX8 but not if the petrol costs are going to cripple me.

Well it would help if you gave some indication of the mileage you do?

i have a type r accord ,and i put €70 per week and get approx 190mls .the engine size is 2.2

It also depends on the price of petrol obviously, which shows no sign of reducing.

    Read these:

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/owners-reviews/search.aspx?model=452#fuel=P&Body=Coupe&transmission=M

The fact you ask would suggest you wouldn't like poor econmy.

Just shy of 18 mpg, in fairness that's what I would expect an Accord 2.2 to do in everyday driving including some pootling about and some 10 mile long spins. The mpg folks quote for some cars on here, I don't know how they achieve them.

You get about 10-13 litres used per 100 kilometers, as opposed to around about 8 or less in a mazda 6.

With petrol at €1.449, the RX-8 would cost €29.19 more than the Focus and €23.87 more than the Mazda 6 per week.

they dont live in a city and do bumper to bumper traffic :D. when i leave home i drive 23 miles to work, about 6 miles is 60mph limit, 3 miles at 50 mph and the rest is 75 mph , bar the last few hundred meters, and i never drop below these speeds and very very rarely hit traffic ,so thats why i often get better mpg than most living in dublin :)

Motorway driving, i average about 24mpg.
Driving around dublin, maybe 16-18mpg at best.

If you're worried about the cost of petrol, the rx8 is not for you.

I was just going to say 18mpg in an ATR must be in traffic?? If not it seems very poor does it not?

The ST gets 25mpg even when pushed but my drives involve 10 minutes bumper to bumper then and hour home in free flowing traffic and then weekend drives with little to no slow traffic so thats maybe why I get that.

That seems like very poor economy.

I've an Rx8 and I don't like working out the MPG but:
    ~€70 fills the tank,
I occasionally drive from Dublin city centre to Glasson westmeath, 125km by google maps. This typically involves about 1hr getting through rush hour traffic in the city, 1hr on the motorway and 20/30mins of back roads, so a reasonably mixed cycle.
This uses a bit under 1/3rd of a tank (slightly over 1/4 if I do it when there's no traffic), so roughly range to a tank is 375kph+ or 233 miles+ (note this is including a significant period in stop go traffic).

That's a very rough estimate ,and I'm calculating based on the trip using 1/3rd of a tank but it's actually a bit less. Reported figures online tend to be between 250miles and 300miles on a tank.

I've actually just gotten an ODB diagnostic tool so I'll try and pull out some accurate MPG figures over the weekend.

If you are getting 25mpg from it you aren't really pushing it much I would think. Which would makes sense as in freeflowing traffic you are probably below 3000rpm for most of it unless overtaking. Also in an hour in freeflowing traffic I would think you cover between 30 and 40 miles :) So someone getting 18mpg from a 2.2 high performance jap engine in a fairly decent sized car isn't out of the way if they were doing say 25 miles a day extra urban (for five days) and the rest in urban traffic to tot up there 190 miles/week :)

I drive about 10/11 miles to work, first mile is through old fashioned suburbia and then the rest is 100kph limit but realistically I rarely see over 90kph on it. Short urban spin to the gym or whatever most evenings and then all urban stuff for the weekend, the ZT does 20mpg, the 520i did 23mpg, the 216 Coupe did 27mpg and a non intercooled Rover 420 turbo diesel did 37mpg. I wouldn't be overly heavyfooted but would give her a bootfull at least once a day for entertainment reasons. Admittedly the slushbox in the ZT is not known for efficiency even by automatic standards.

That works out at 21.5 mpg, admittedly it's a crude as f*** measurement as your 1/3 or 1/4 tank way of estimating use is not really accurate. Taking 2.5 hours to cover 125km is an average speed of 30ish mph which would indeed be fairly representative of the combined cycle :)

im getting 45 miles or so for a tenner petrol.

    3.0 E46 BMW.

    6.8 litres of fuel=45 miles.

    6.8 litres=1.5 gallons.

    1.5 gallons=45 miles.

    1.0 gallon=30 miles.

    30mpg.

Parkers figures say 28mpg. And thats what my onboard computer says also...28.6mpg. I do drive it like a granny though.

The figure drops to 19mpg if I only drive in town.

A poster on here a long time ago described driving in traffic in an rx8 as feeling like throwing cup fulls of petrol constantly out the window.

Did he explain how he made the mistake of buying an RX-8, a car obviously not suitable for him? If not, maybe he should have been pouring those cups op petrol over his head :D

I know three people who had RX8's. All three loved the cars but got rid of them as they were "drinking" petrol.

Two of bought from new, the third bought used.

At best late teens for mpg......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Op, if you got even an thought about mpg, then rx8 is not for you. Its lovely lovely car, but mpg in it is horible, parts cost a fortune too.

As for that 2.2 accord i may say its really really bad. I get better mpg from 2.5 turbo 400 hp... You should check that out, mighty be something wrong with car.

The 2.2 ATR engine is the same as my old Prelude, 18mpg city is probably right. I used to get about 26-27mpg on mostly rural roads.
