Cataract/Laser Sugery Advice

    Hi all,

I had a consultation with Optical Express yesterday and while the good news is they can fix my eyesight (currently at -4/1.5) the bad news is she says I have a cataract in my left eye... which would explain the blurred vision if I cover the other one.

I'm only 35 so it was a bit of a surprise, but the perscription I have has effectively doubled in the last 2 years (well since the last time I got it checked) so I'll have to get it looked at. They quoted me €2500 to fix it and it'd include a trip to the UK. After that then my right eye could be balanced out (more money of course).

Just wondering if that's the going rate for something like this or would I be better off shopping around (up North maybe?). Obviously I don't want to take the cheap n cheerful option but if I could get it done for less elsewhere by a reputable clinic that'd be preferred (2500 is a lot of money - especially as I've only recently found a contract role after being made redundant in late 2009 - I also don't have any VHI cover etc).

As I said above it's something I'd like to get sorted too as I do a lot of driving/commuting and work in IT so in front of screens all day.

She also said it's a pretty routine operation and very little risk but it sounded serious enough to me - then again my background is IT not medicine so maybe I'm worrying about nothing?

    Cheers for any advice...

Did they not refer you to your G.P. or an ophthalmologist?

The HSE do cataract operations. You don't necessarily need to go private but it will probably be quicker.

For your cataract condition, better to seek solution with your GP or hospital clinic, ie, eye and ear hospital. it is a medical condition where I will feel safer to deal with GP and hospitals. I am not sure how it will work out for you moneywise, but I think you will be put on a list and will be scheduled for operation. Good luck to you.
