Great price for a great little netbook.
If you want a great value netbook you cant go wrong with the Samsung N130. The N130 is the lightest in its class, with a slim and elegant chassis that is accentuated with sensuous styling. Yet it still utilises the highest quality components and materials like a 10.1" high resolution display(non gloss LED) with its proper aspect ratio which delivers sharper and brighter images, as well as the most accurate playback of movies and related content. Processor - Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz) 533 MHz FSB with 512KB Cache. Memory - 1GB. Hard drive - 160GB SATA. Webcam - Integrated webcam 0.3 Mega Pixels. Battery life - 6 hours. Speakers - 1 x 1.5 mono speaker. System - genuine windows 7 starter.

Nice that it's non glossy, does use the older series of processor which have shorter battery life although the samsungs always seemed to have good battery life

It's actually a great little netbook for that price.
Only downside for me would be the 1gb of ram, if that was upgradeable and I could just swap it out for the 2gb stick i have in my current, almost dead laptop, I'd buy it.

6 cell battery gives the back a lift and makes typing easier AND helps keep the vents uncovered.

It is, isn't it? I have 2 gigs in my NC10.

I need to buy a new netbook soon, I'm going to be backpacking for a while and need something small and light and reliable and this seems pretty much perfect.

Just for a price comparative, the same machine is €279.99 in Argos.

Last post, Ram is easily upgraded, there's a door on the bottom, only one screw involved, nice.

Might pick one up this weekend :)

anyone wanna do me a favour and tell me how it compares to the n145

    http://www.samsung.com/us/business/laptops/NP-N145-JP01US-features

There is an 80 euro difference with the n145 being 280

    I'd be using laptop for

    internet
    tv watching
    documents
website design/bit of photo edit but nothing too heavy

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

The n140 is probably a slightly better machine, but not €80 better...

The main difference seems to be battery life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,495 ✭✭✭Abelloid

Slightly faster processor and GFX, looks like a glossy screen (I detest glossy screens...) but not much else I can see, 4-1 card slot..

I have an NC10 and find that watching tv on it is a pain due to the poor Intel GMA 950 onboard graphics, same as the N130, some of the Samsung net books have the ion graphics which would be a huge improvement as they can handle full HD.

it depends - some intel integrated graphics will do video and even hd video well - e.g. gma 4500mhd

Strangely enough the GMA500 (usually comes with the Z-series Atoms) can do 1080p H264/AVC acceleration no problem.

The GMA950 that comes with the more common N-series Atoms doesnt have any H264/AVC acceleration at all.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

So this won't play HD videos?

Not really a problem for me to be honest...

Plays SD xvid files no problem, but anything larger it will struggle.

I wouldnt say "no problem" but when set-up correctly and using the latest drivers it can! It took Intel almost 2 years after releasing the chip to get proper HW decoding working on it and even now it's not flawless.

I am interested in getting something like this for travelling.

Are you saying though that this would struggle with even 720P files?

I have the NC10 which has the same on board graphics, I updated the drivers last night following what was suggested earlier in the thread which has improved things, but now with RTE Player it looks like the arm up Anne Doyle is moving her lips 3/4 of the time instead of 1/2 the time as it was before. Playback from an external DVD drive is better but tends to stutter from time to time.

Not if you use CoreAVC. It's currently $8.95, which works out at just under €7, so not expensive at all considering what it offers. I used it on my NC10 and was able to play 720p (H.264/AVC) mkv files without any dropped frames. CPU usage goes up to 85% and on average is slightly lower, but if you want to play back those type of files, it is indeed possible.

Just downloaded and installed CoreAVC and can confirm that it transforms the graphics performance. Cheers Rsaeire.

Just checked it with this Youtube and it can handle 480p fullscreen but not the 720p.

More than happy with the performance improvement for my requirements none the less.

I've 2Gb of ram installed btw.

Ouch. That might explain the price.

    Gamestop's product description clearly states:
System - genuine windows 7 starter.

Make sure and take a screenshot and then lodge a complaint with Gamestop.

Doesn't Windows 7 Starter have a load of limitations? It seems to get lots of bad reviews.

Thinking of getting this for the wife purely for browsing etc, im sure this is perfect for the task?

Also is this an online offer only, i dont suppose the bricks and mortar stores stock them?

For a netbook, it should be fine. If you're interested, you can check out the comparison chart between all the different versions of Windows 7 on Wikipedia.

Does this version of the N130 have a 3g modem built in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,807 ✭✭✭g0g

Have been looking for a cheap netbook ever since I missed that decent Argos price error before Christmas. Was so close to buying this, but now seeing that it might be an older version of Windows has kinda put me off :(

I assume this netbook would be more than enough for doing the basics - web browsing / youtube etc?

Would it be ok for watching whatever resolution videos are the ones that are about 650MB-750MB for a standard length film?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭wildefalcon

I'm not sure that windows 7 is a whole lot better than xp on a netbook.
    I'll go see if there's a comparison

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,807 ✭✭✭g0g

Just looking on Amazon and it seems to have absolutely fantastic reviews!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully
