Would appreciate people's help here on picking my new car and any issues I should be aware of.

Looking at either a BMW 318/320D or Ford Mondeo Diesel.

BMW: 2008, mileage around 30,000 (anything I should be checking?, timing belt etc? Expecting 6 month warranty with it.

Ford Mondeo 2009: mileage around 15-30k, obviously I'd still have a year's warranty on it.
Looking at the 2L diesel model 125-140hp.

Two very different choices there, the BMW is RWD and the Ford is FWD. Both cars have the usual stuff in them but the BMW has more badge going on and the ford is bigger in all the ways that matter.
I'd go with the Mondeo because as a package it's more practical, and cheaper to maintain.
    Hope that helps ya
