Interesting proposal to keep the Shuttle flying until 2017. Sound good but I would worry about the safety of it:(

NASA is considering a plan to keep the space shuttle Endeavour in flight-like condition after its last scheduled mission, a move that could lead to its transformation into a privatized spaceship rather than a museum piece.
Endeavour’s continued operation through 2017 is part of a proposal that could receive millions of dollars in development funds from the space agency next month.

sounds like a crazy idea at this late stage, but one that Sally ride had advocated before America's new space policy, she was ignored.

i agree with you about the safety aspect,it was feasible IMO when Ride proposed it but there has been two years of brain drain now since then, the vast majority of experts have moved on and as it says in the article the production lines have been closed.

even so the idea is alluring is'nt it?

Well it sure is very alluring to an old Shuttle fan like me:)

A big no imo. As Clln points out,a lot of the expertise that's been part of the teams that look after the Orbiters has been lost. A decision was made to end the STS programme and the career of the Orbiters and should be abided by. Extending the life of the Orbiter(s) would be a massive mistake imo.

As much as i would love to see them continue to fly, I do agree that it is time to finish the programme now. A decision to continue flying needed to be taken two years ago, not now. It is now time to throw all the resourses into the next generation of craft and get that flying as soon as possible.

Beeker goes off and flogs himself for saying the Shuttle should stop flying:D

Worth considering if the money is there and it doesn't effect development of new craft
