Hi Folks, does anyone know of any areas in Newbridge where i can go running without gettin a bang of a car? I have just run me first 10k in 57 mins. I am really hoping to do the curragh half marathon this summer. I have been running on a track in the curragh thats about 3-4 miles. Is there anywhere longer that i can run?

Also while im here, the half marathon plans on hal higdon etc are all distance based - eg run 100m up a hill times 4 etc but i wouldnt have a clue what distances are what.

Anyway any help would be much appreciated, cheers folks@:)
Is there any running clubs around kildare/newbridge (donadea a bit far:)

I'm from Newbridge. To be honest, I can't say there are many amazing places to run in the town. I mainly run on the curragh if I have to. I usually go along a route that's just off the long road out towards curragh camp coming from the motorway exit. If you go to the right, it's a nice hilly route but only lasts about 10 minutes so I usually run back and forth a few times. I've gone the other direction too, towards Donnely's Hollow, but to be honest the ground is really rough and it's a big dodgy for ankle injuries and things.

Other places I can think of are out past the Racecourse, or maybe even down at the pitches in Newbridge College.

Resident in Newbridge myself. The pitches of Newbridge college are across a bridge that has a gate on it that is usually locked. You can do a loop of the town via Liffey hall that will be over 5 miles. On my training log there are links to runs garmin mapped runs that I have done around Newbridge that you can check.
There are an awful lot of cement footpaths in the town itself which is why I try to run outside of it if possible. With the dark nights its safer to run on well lit footpaths though.

I'm from Newbridge aswell. When the days get longer and weather gets abit better the Curragh is great to run on. I usually start at Lumville and run toward Kildare on the grass basically parallel to the motorway. There is abit of a track on this route from people doing it. The loop is approx 4-5miles so could do it twice as you build up.

However, with the weather not being great I have started running in Naas on the ring roads as they are very well lit, the paths are wide and made of tarmac. Can make up your own route on this or just go up and down a few times will easily get you a 10k run.

I found a few quite enough roads around newbridge that are nice runs, nowhere as near as spectaular as the lucky lads and ladys have up around Wicklow and the likes have but scenic enough all the same. Heres a few of my regular ones

Hey Ronnie, we can't see those routes. You will have to adjust your privacy settings so it's open for all to see.

Living in Newbridge too on the Curragh side. Run mostly up and around the Curragh. Winter evenings run in Newbridge town up through Liffey Hall or past Newbridge Silverware. The Curragh has loads of different routes and trails to take.

Sometimes go down and run by Wyeth\Pfizer, good flat stretch and lit up too.

Heres my Garmin info http://connect.garmin.com/activity/66367739 Just go previous\next

Quite a few runners in Newbridge!

Heres the run I did tonight. I go from College Farm and out to the roundabout at the Curragh racecourse via Liffey hall and back again.
There are lights out as to the Curragh so its quite good for running at night. I usually run on the grass verge in Liffey hall.

Not me mostly run solo, back running for last 2 years, Conn half '09 first race since '98 Dub Marathon! Was a member of club back in Donegal as a juvenile (long time ago now :)!). I seem to always be running in the opposite direction of the Newbridge AC guys Sun mornings.

Anyone be interested in settin up a group to run twice a week to prepare for the curragh half marathon, monday wed evenings at 7 and sunday mornings at nine? In newbridge that is.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 576 ✭✭✭sarsfieldsrock

Wednesdays I am usually at the track in Newbridge doing some sort of track session.
I am following a plan for Barcelona in March so I won't really be doing group runs as the plan has a target pace etc. After Barca I would be up for a 9am run on the Sunday morning all right.
I will be off to Conn in April so I will be upping the milage after Barcelona for a few weeks.

I'd be in the same kind of situation as sarsfieldsrock, following a plan for edinburgh in may although could do a few monday evenings as I mostly just do an 'easy' session on mondays and dont really have a target pace for them, within reason of coarse, Saturday is beer night so Sunday morning not good most weeks:P

Hi Justy, Thanks. I wouldn't mind joining but the times would not suit. I get home from work after 7pm most evenings. The Sunday long run I could maybe do. I'm the little guy that runs in the opposite direction to you on most Sundays. BTW Where is the track in Newbridge and is it open to the public?

    Justy,

Thanks for posting that information - I might be interested in joining in some of those runs. Do I have to officially join the club to do that?

What distances are all of those runs? Is there some coaching involved?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭deisecelt

Wow I had no idea there were actually as many runners in Newbridge haha. I want to run on the curragh more this week. I try to stay away from running on the sidewalk. Anyone have any good trails along the curragh for me? I'm going to try out one today starting from around Lumville up towards the motorway, and going along beside it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 ed93105

this is a nice 4.3 mile route, all on smooth grass tracks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭itchyblood

I got out for a nice run today. I actually passed a good few runners as well so I wonder whether any post in this thread.

I started down near Lumville and went up towards the motorway, crossed the road and went all along beside the motorway. I kept on going up past where it gets kind of mucky, then I got onto a groove of tyre marks instead of a flat track. It got really uneven and bumpy so I turned back and went the same way I came. All in all 45 mins or so.

I should've taken your route, ed93105. When you get to the end of the left side of that map, where do you turn left to start making the route circular? Did you start making a left where that horse-bridge over the motorway is? (across the way from the Gaelscoil?)

yes, you can turn left at that horse bridge, head along the short bit of unused road towards the trees, turn off the road to the left before you reach the trees and keep on the track which is about 50 metres parallel to the trees heading towards the curragh camp / rugby club

Runner chasing/ running beside a cyclist?

From outside Naas (Sallins side)... working in Dublin... so the Curragh is my odd weekend freedom. It is unbeatable for running (cross-country) :)

When I was churning the miles (marathon training) the Curragh could easily give a 20-miler without overlap... so much space, grass = minimum impact... and lots of activity out there to keep you interested... and sheep to hurdle over of course - even more interesting

Bring on the longer evenings too...

has anybody on here ever ran along the canal if so what are the toe paths like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 194 ✭✭lizanne83

Did 9 miles on the Curragh today.
    Splendid :-)

Canal runs in Sallins, yes, down past aqueduct towards prosperous is lovely... but not Newbridge, don't know about that

another runner from newbridge. would be very interested in joining a running club. use to work late nights but not anymore. i'll check out the website.

the park by the liffey is also fine for a quick run, if you incorporate some laps or perhaps Liffey Hall/ Sarsfields/ College Rugby grounds etc for length.

That's the exact route I use at the moment. 90% if it is smooth and level.
Have had a few knee problems so trying to get back into it at the moment. If you take a random route on the grass it can be rough where horses have been working.

You must park in the same place as me - I know there were some problems with car break-ins there last summer.
Don't leave wallets/keys/sat navs in the car!
