the ford fiesta and vw polo 1.4 tdis are both really good. but good 1.4l diesels are relatively new if the budget is tight

Clio 1.5dci are a good wee car, the north is full of them, not too many down here. From 2001 on i think.

I have a Megane 1.5dci 06 which I bought new and have never, ever been able to get that mileage from it no matter how carefully I drive. Best would be 54/55 and that's motorway driving. My usual driving is a mix of city and dual carriageway and I average 45/48 depending on where I am going. If you are getting that, I'd be interested to find out how.

I guess it depedns what you call a small car.

for example if you are talking about golfs/a3's, having test driven them both I would conisder 1.6l diesels underpowered, but for polo's and the like 1.6 is probably tonnes

Nobody is getting that mileage from the megane's. Its the mileage that Renault advertised for them but you'd want to be going down hill all the way to achieve it. We've had 3 diesel megane's between myself and the Missus in the last 8 years. She has a laguna 1.5 diesel now which is achieving much better results than any of the megane's ever did.

If i drive at 50mph, which is low rev in 5th gear, she'll run forever on a tank of juice

You shouldn't say that with such certainty. I was told my mpg was impossible too. But it's not at all. You just have to use your head to get good mpg.

If it means driving at 50mph in 5th gear on a motorway that is more accurate.

Ive a 1.5dci megane also and regularly get high 50s on it. Around town around 50mpg average also

You get 50 mpg around town? As in driving in a town with traffic and speed limits?

I get 63 mpg (motorway driving at 120km/hr) in my golf but it's 92, never given any trouble.

I bought it in England worth the money but had to pay €720 vrt  Still have my care for roughly €1500 though and its grand for college........

But yes I know no one would drive it :o

Never said anything about motorways. There are many other roads where 50mph is the limit. Although your point is perfectly valid about motorways, long motorway journeys in particular. Sanity must come first.

    63mpg ?
How are you arriving at that figure ?
What size engine have you got ?

    Its 1.6l

We've filled it to the brim, put the clock back and drove until it was in the red, filled it to the brim again, got how much we put in in litres, converted it to gallons and calculated it against what I had on the clock ;)

Did that numerous weeks and always got between 63 and 63.5mpg because I do the same journey all the time.

Its hard to believe but anyone who ever had a mk 2 golf will tell you they are a miser in diesel.

    I love it :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Its certainly possible. Friend of mine has a '91 golf mk2 1.6d and he gets unbelievable mpg all the time, i've a bora tdi and get about 50/52 mpg, but he always goes further than me on the diesel.

Fair slow yoke though, i will say that!

in fairness its suprising what milage you can get if you drive economically. my 55mpg in the polo was done with donegal - dublin return, with about 2 hours city driving and booting it down the road the rest of the time. i definatley wasnt going to be gettin the best out of the car

What mileage is it on, any work done to it, sounds like a good find! 1500 euros are you studying to be an accountant!

I like the Mk2 golf and was very close to buying a 1.6TD myself at one stage.

Hey :D Its kinda a long story.....we bought the car in the UK. It was a 1.9l petrol and I paid £450 for it. We took it home and sold its engine and gearbox for €250 if I remember correctly. Put a 1.6l diesel from a 91 jetta into it. Had to pay €720 vrt though  So really it cost less than €1500 didn't it? :p

It has 177,000 miles on the engine (I know cause we actually have the clock from the jetta in it, had to put it in to get the rev counter to work)

Ha I'm studying to be a maths and applied maths teacher by the way :p

We didn't need to do any body work to it at all, its in perfect condition. It has central locking, a sunroof and side protection bars too. Its red, 3 door. We fitted a fob for the central locking the other day.

I was going to put a turbo into it but decided not to. I will buy something else once I finish college anyway and its only sluggish when its cold. after 10 mins its perfect. Will probably never sell it though. Although I have had 2 guys randomly come up to me at garages and give me their numbers incase I ever sell it. :p

any other ideas?is the focus 1.6 a safe enough purchase in term of reliability, fuel economy etc?
I'm driving a 2008 focus 1.6tdci this last 14 months and can't complain. Bit sluggish from a standing start but i'm getting close to 50mpg blending city and m50 driving. Don't think i've enough mileage to comment on reliability, but no mechanical problems so far.
