Windows Media Player 12 Problem

When I go to organise and "Music Library Locations" beside the My Music folder it says "Default Location Unresponsive". This seems to have the effect that it doesn't update any tag details in the my music folder when I "find album info".
It also won't properly save any changes I make to the library and when i go to Tools>Apply media information changes it just stays at 0% and says the server is busy.

What the hell is going on? I've already make sure the WMP server has read/write access to the folder, has anyone else come across this?

And how do you get the advanced tag editor on Windows 7/WMP12?

God I miss media player 7....

Cant help with the other bit , but I can tell you they bizarrely took out advanced tag edit in wmp12.

Try MP3tag (google it) or seriously consider another player. I use Mediamonkey myself. Select your album press crtl+l and it searches amazon for tag info and art, hit apply, job done. It's plenty customizable too with loads of cool scripts should you want to get into it.

Finally a response, I was beginning to give up on this one!!:pac:

I think another player may be the way to go, I used to find the older media players good but this one is just crap. Does mediamonkey allow you to sync with other devices? I have a phone with alot of storage which I use as an mp3 player so the main purpose of organinsing my music is to allow me to keep that device up to date and running smoothly with regards mp3 tags etc...

Thanks for the response by the way.

You can edit tags in Windows Explorer. Navigate to where your music files are saved, select one or more MP3 files and change what you want on the Details pane at the bottom of the window.

This doesn't work for some reason, for about half of my mp3 files I can see the blank boxes in the details tab but I can't type there. I checked the access properties and all that and it looks ok, not sure why I can't type there for these files. Maybe something to do with the "default location unresponsive" issue in WMP?

Yes it will sync with devices even apple ones if you install the plugin. There are also some plug ins to do different things with sync.

Win amp is also another popular player. I always favored media player myself, but with the changes made in 12 especially to the interface I found the need to change.

It might be that part of the MP3 file itself is corrupt. They can play fine in Windows Media Player, but any attempt to alter the tags will not work. I've got a similar album on my hard drive somewhere. iTunes wouldn't add it to the library, play it or let me copy it to my iPod.

Could you try converting them to another format and back to MP3 again? It's not ideal, but at least then you'll have something that you can edit the tags for.

Yup i have always thought this Ricky!

OLDER IS MUCH BETTER! (My favourite of the WMP series is version 9 (Goes downhill after 9))

    No argument about that here

Whichever one was the original one that came with Windows XP (when it was first released, I think it was 8) was the best.

I think I'll just uninstall WMP so and switch to a different player. I already have VLC player installed, maybe I'll switch my music to that?

I'm also thinking I should start a new thread asking people to nominate their favourite media player with good/bad points mentioned, might give me some ideas....

Edit: Mods, where would be the best place to start such a thread? I'm not over this side of Boards much so I tend to get a bit lost:pac:

God I miss 9. I'd be delighted if they re-vamped that UI.

I've been trying the alphas for media monkey 4, buggy as hell at the moment but showing promise. Very little in terms of new features right now and many of my scripts and plug ins not working but ill let it pass given it;s alpha status.

My main problem with media player 9 much as I loved the old gal was the load time when the library got anyway big :(

Ya i have looked all over for 8 and cant find it.... Why is 8 hidden so much?? (hehehe)

I think 8 only runs on XP or higher so it wouldnt work for me but i am curious why 8 is hidden so much :D

I don't think MS like people using older versions of their current products...

I downloaded Media Monkey last night (not sure which version, got it from cnet) and it's class! Finds tags from the net really easily using filenames or song titles and you can then update the actual file properties using these. It was also able to overwrite the buggy ID3 properties of some mp3 files as mentioned above. Overall looks very slick.

Now if I could just figure out how to remove duplicate songs which I've already deleted from my folders...

Why not just DOWNLOAD 9 and run it in XP or 98se compatibility mode?? (Should work fine :))

    Toooooo much effort.

11 made many advances that it would be retarded to roll back for anyway. I was really just in love with the look though. The Feel is another story.
