The South American part of my RTW

So im going on a RTW type trip starting in Sept this year. Im planning on taking in South America, New Zealand, Australia, and parts of S.E. Asia.

Im living in Canada right now and I was looking at flights from Canadian and US companies and they all come in at well over $3000, some quote me over $5000 for the trip so basically its working out cheaper for me to fly home and start my trip from there. Im planning on booking a half RTW ticket (thanks for the info on that Dory!) with USIT to get me from Ireland to N.Z. with about 5-6 months in S. America on the way. They quoted me 1182 euro for this and if I want an extra flight to Australia from NZ it will be 1320 euro. How does that sound? Seems like decent value to me?

So if I do the half RTW I will be flying into Rio and out of Santiago. This could affect my route a little for S.A. Originally I thought I would be able to fly into either Brazil or Colombia and fly out of the other, that way I could just do a loop around taking in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.

Since I won’t be able to fly into or out of Colombia it looks like il have to do a lot of backtracking to get back to Chile for my onward flight to N.Z. Does anyone have any suggestions on what route I could take starting in Rio and still taking in all the countries listed above? Budget is an issue too so flights are probably not an option for me unless I can find a cheap one?

Basically I don’t want to backtrack and go to places more than once. I figured I could go from Brazil to Argentina and work my way up towards Bolivia from there, maybe going into Northern Chile on the way.

Does anyone know if there is any trip I could take from Bolivia through the Amazon to bypass Peru so that I could just do Peru on the way back down to Chile?
Or is it worth seeing western and eastern parts of Peru? Maybe I could go up one way and back down another?

Basically I want to hear from people who have travelled a lot overland to give me an idea of what my options are before I go ahead and book my flights.

    Thanks...

The Amazon is a pretty dense little forest. What you could do is fly from Cusco to Iquitos (via Lima) and get a boat to Colombia. But even then you'd have to fly again from the jungle to Bogota. I'm not a nervous person, and don't listen to the scaremongers, but it's widely known the river parts of the Amazon in Colombia should be passed through swiftly. You really can't get off a boat in the Amazon and hitch a ride/bus to the capital.

I know you're in Canada, but how difficult would it be for you to get to Los Angeles? I just found a return flight LA - Bogota for €443 - I don't know your dates so I just threw in 1 Sep - 4 Dec. On the 1st of Sepetmber LA to Sydney is €350. Obviously those dates wouldn't work, but LA is a great airport to try, seems to be cheap. Even if you factored in a flight from Buenos Aires or Santiago back to Colombia for €300, that America - SA- longwinded way to Sydney but no backtracking on land for €1093, and that's only from 2 minutes of searching on SkyScanner.
And no paying for a flight from Canada to Ireland.

Thats an idea I guess, a flight to LA came up at $347 for me on expedia, so it looks like it would work out a bit cheaper. There is another reason I want to go home first though, I havnt been in over a year and it will be almost two come September so if I dont go then I wont have seen anyone for over 3 years.

Im going to look into how hard it would be overland before I book my flights I guess. Im sure someone on here has had a similar plan to mine at some point...maybe I should just fork out on a flight when im there. Pity Ryanair dont operate out there;)
