Try an Insurance broker, a good one might get a few hundred of the 5k+ quotes your probably going to get!

    Nasty but such is life!:(

I can feel you pain.. I had 2 accidents within 2 years of each other.. none at speed or recklessness, just wrong place at the wrong time..

Needless to say the cost of my insurance went through the roof.. ballpark of what the previous poster mentioned.. The first 2 years expensive and they stung, but after that my renewal quotes dropped by almost 50% a time for the next 3 years..

    Now the bad news..

Unfortunately, with the financial hits most insurance companies have taken lately, insurance is getting more expensive and will continue to do so.

My advice, if you can get one to insure you, take it, stick with them for 2-3 years, shopping around each time to make sure they are competitive and that will help.

Spread the payments out over the year or 10 months, whatever they offer, just to ease the pain of it.

Would you not leave it for 3 years and try again when the dust has fully blown over?

I use quoteme.ie at the moment, third year with them now..

Not bad to be honest, but there are others, 123.ie seem to be competitive in some situations as are bestquote.ie

If you go direct with a few companies they may load the excess, but might be worth taking the risk for the first year.

Another option might be to go as a named driver with the other half or parents for a year or two to get at least some sort of NCB built up..

look up britton insurance. The site will quote a silly number but call em after your online quote. currently with em thankfully not in same situation op yet a mate is.

me thinks you may have to rethink your car e.g smaller

I got a 3 year ban and got my licence back after 2.

Quinn direct quoted me no problems and without underwriting... but they doubled my premium.

I was 28 when I took out my new policy whereas you're younger so I don't know if that will make a difference.

Unfortunately my insurance had expired just over 2 years when I decided to take out the new policy, so my no claims bonus was no longer valid. I'd recommend you take out a new policy before the 2 years is up since you last had insurance.

I also got an additional 10% discount because I have a second quinn direct policy. Quinn also add €100 on to your insurance if you insure your car for less than €2000, so make sure to value your car at over €2000 when getting a quote.

fyi: the online system quoted me €900 on a 1.4l car and without a no claims bonus. When I phoned them for a quote taking into account my conviction, they quoted €1800.

    hey quick update.

have been getting a huge variation in prices for 3rd party fire and theft. ranging from 1400 up to 4000. and many who wont go near me

1400 is way below what i expected to be honest bestqoute.ie

I'll bet they won't actually stand over that online quote whan a human reviews your record.

had a nice conversation with a real live human on the phone. a few of the online quotes were in the 500 to 800 mark but they are irrelevent because they dont take into account convicted drivers online.

I'd reccommend against spreading the payment out over the year if possible. At least until you check the additional charge for it. Sometime it can up to about 20% interest which is the close to the max they can charge without registering as a moneylender.

If I were 23 again, just coming off a ban, and someone gave me a quote of €1400 for insurance ... I'd take their arm off at the elbow before they had a chance to change their minds!

that quote of €1400 does seem a little low, i started driving when i was 22 and my insurance was €1400:confused:

Sweet, nice result there. I reckon in 12 months time, if things are kept clean, that should drop down to near the 1k mark..

    Happy motoring.. :)

Sorry OP but did you not have to have certain condidtions in which to get your licence back early, after serving 2/3 of the ban? A friend of mine in a similar situation has nearly 2/3 of his ban served, but in order to get it back he must supply the court with a) proof that he has suffered financially as a result of the ban and b) provide the court a quote from an insurance company...he hasn't started looking yet, but is bracing himself for some very bad news from the insurance companies !!!! €1400 for you sounds pretty good to me taking your age, gender and that it's a caraven you're driving into account. The most important thing though is that you've learned a valuable lesson early in life, I'm sure you're probably less of a risk now having served the ban and will NEVER risk it again, compered to other idiots who do and don't get caught. Unfortunately insurance companies don't tend to see it like that.

I had a carbon copy of this situation in my own life. Was extremely stressful, I bet you have wised up since then like me! Good to see things worked out bounty!
