Gonna tag "home" and see how long it takes to be robbed :pac:

Seems it is doing 'something' tried it when I read this and it's the first time it has actually started up and listed people.

sometimes i wish this site http://pleaserobme.com/ was still doing what it done when it was first launched i.e. displaying when stupid people were not at home.

checking into your house or in the vicinity of your house you deserve to get robbed.

    x2

WHY in the name of hell do you want people to know where you are?going a bit too far i think.

I don't get why you think this is the case - surely checking into your house would alert all of my friends (who also moonlight as thieves) that my home has people in it, thus making it more difficult to rob?

Have a good look around - there's houses everywhere. Some have people in them, some don't. I don't see how FB places compromises this

Its a shade too far in my eyes. Your tagging where you live for potentially the world to see. At the end of the day, who really cares?

"OMG, X is at home" or whatever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭patrickmooney

It may have launched last year, but it was only available via IP blocks in Ireland. It officially was made available to Irish IPs in the last day or two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,692 ✭✭✭Loomis

Noticed it in the app yesterday and a couple of friends Checked In.
I tried yesterday and today but it constantly says 'Locating You' and stays like that.

Prefer the idea of Four Sqaure to be honest. Less invasive and will remain so knowing how crap Facebook are with their privacy policies.

It only tells your friends where you are, if your friends are the type to go rob your gaff when you're not there, they are probably not really your friends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,692 ✭✭✭Loomis

I was referring to being able to tag people at will. If that's anything to go by there will be other drawbacks to using it.

Really wouldn't be doing that. No idea why you'd check into your own house. Plant a big target on yourself.

Part of the reason of using Four Square, I'd see it anyway, is that say on a night out you'd get an alert when a friend is nearby that you mightn't otherwise have known was out. Aside from using it to recommend restaurants etc it could definitely be used that way. Again, would rather Four Square over Places thus far.

I get your point. I haven't checked in at home myself, but most of my friends on Facebook know where I live anyway.. And the ones that don't I wouldn't care if they did know. It's a bad sign if you are worried about letting your friends know where you live.

You have friends who would rob you? You need better friends.

Maybe people should have a look at how it works.

Go into Edit Friends and setup a list, lets call it Places, and only add people you want knowing where you are.

Then go into the Facebook settings,
Places I check in to <- The list you just set up, i.e. Places
Friends can check me in to places <- Disable
Include me in "People here now" after I check in <- Disable

Now only those people in your Place list will see when you check in somewhere and if they are in the same area they will get a message pushed to their phone. And vice versa.

    Nice service when used correctly!!

In the 'Friends can check me in to places' section, it says:
'Facebook will never share or expose your location automatically'
    - good to know.
'Only friends can tag you and check you in to a place'
    - Does disabling this also disable people being able to tag you in a place?
'We'll notify you when a friend has tagged you'
    - should probably tell you this only happens if you enable notifications for this and comments left in the Notifications section. A bit misleading otherwise.

I would hope so, the setting is called "Friends can check me in to places", so by having it set to "disabled" it should disable friends from doing this.

Yeah, that paragraph is very poorly worded. They should have different text for when you select enabled and for disabled.

Is there a setting to 'turn on' current location? Or do you just enter one on your profile?
I've done that but it's still not working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 516 ✭✭✭sophie1234

you check into your house. you then go into town and check into a restaurant or something.

ergo i know you're house is empty...

i see there are houses everywhere, lot easier for me to pick an empty one if i use facebook places.

It only tells your friends where you are, if your friends are the type to go rob your gaff when you're not there, they are probably not really your friends.

you're forgetting though that the majority of people who use facebook a quite stupid in fairness, and having their profile set to public, if that's the case EVERYONE can see their check in's.

i can also see people checking in to stupid places "blah just checked into the 46a bus stop go me yay" it's going to make a lot of people's facebook streams extremely noisy.

Actually, all you know is that particular individual is not at home. You don't know whether or not they live alone, and therefore you don't know if the house is empty.

If you really wanted to hit someone hard, that single piece of info could be extremely handy. Its amazing how much info facebook gives away. I recently did an example for a group

    1) Someone give me their email address

    2) Checkout their facebook

    3) Ok, I want to hack that email account. We'll hit reset (Assume its a Hotmail account)

    4) Reset question "Favorite Fictional Character"

    5) Check facebook and there is it. No need to guess a password.

    6) Access All Areas Achieved.

Places is a handy feature when used correctly but people need to seriously start checking how much info they are giving away on FaceBook.
