Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed.....
Anyone got any advice on the free app Viber, it allows you to call other iPhone users for free if they've also installed the app. I thought it was a great idea and I've been using it to call my brother in the US. However someone just told me I'll have to pay eventually.... Any info would be appreciated

    No, they're talking nonsense.

Typical Irish response/rumour - you pay minimal data charges if out and about and get them for free if on wi fi,its a great App.

to receive a call from Skype you need the app on
but with Viber you dont, is one difference.

I doubt it incurred no cost whatsoever. There is data transfer going on. Might be small but eventually it would start to be chargeable.

I too have used it a fair bit and have seen very little use in data even. Fantastic app.

    Not true.

    What isn't true?

You need a skype account, to be signed in and for skype to be running in the background to receive/make a call with it.

With Viber you just need the app installed.

Okay so maybe I jumped in without checking it all. But I've got Skype calls on my iPhone. That is it rings when the app isn't open. Maybe Skype was running on my 'puter so that could explain it....

Yep, but to do that you have to have the app on. It can't run in the background if you turn it off.

It also periodically signs me out no matter what I do.

Not needing an account - as with viber - is vastly more convenient IMO.

Thanks so much for the advice/answers....
Pretty much what I thought but I wanted to be able to go back to the person who challenged me with some other opinions....
Their loss if they don't want to install/use the App

Skype MUST be on in order to receive a call and you must sign in, Viber, on the other hand, is up and running once it's downloaded. A vast difference.

Think I was just in a bad mood or something earlier. Viber is pretty cool and I didn't mean to come across as a Skype superfan or something.

Anyone know if the texting feature within the Viber app is free as well?

Coming soon according to the viber website.

For free texting try whatsapp its a messenger stlye ap that allows free texting to other whatsapp users its similar to viber in that once installed it tells you who in your contqcts has it install also.

been using Viber for a while. All in all great app if both users are on wireless.
Rubbish if on 3G (either person)
Downside is also that both users have to have Iphone but their site is saying that client for Android is coming out soon.

I still prefer Skype as its on all platforms. If skype implemented the feature from Viber where you don’t need to have it running to receive the call it would be great.

Viber is new and it has a great potential

I've used Viber on both 3G and wireless, the only difference being initially on 3G there was a bit of messing getting properly connected.

Not ideal, but but no means useless and worth a go.

Once connected, the voice clarity in both cases is really excellent - way better than a normal GSM call.

Found the sound quality in viber to be pretty sketchy tbh.

For me skype is much clearer.

A viber call actually uses very little data on 3G. If you have a decent allowance there is no need to worry but the usual caveats apply -keep an eye on your account.

In addition, you can install it on your iPad and associate it with a 2nd number, should you have same. Can help avoid roaming charges.

    great on wifi

not so great on 3g.....sound quality is excellent though.

I'm having some problems with viber? If someone tries to ring me it won't show on the iPhone but will show as a missed call in the viber app? But I can ring people no problem through viber... it's a 3G on wifi...

Might sound silly but did u try to uninstall and install Viber again?

yup, worked for a few hours and then went the same way again

Do you have skype? Maybe something got to do with it on Multitasking?
could try to get rid of it on multitasking bar, when using Viber.
I think an email to Viber explaining fault would be helpful also.

No, no skype.. no other voip apps either... will delete and reinstall one more time and then email viber about it.

    Thanks :)

That's the message that appears on installation, nevertheless it works impeccably.
