    I'm a guitar player just looking to get some basic composition ideas down so that I can show them to potential bandmates. Problem is I have no idea where to begin. Even if it's just me playing with a drum track in the background that'd probably be enough. Any advice wuold be much appreciated.

    when you say you've no idea do you mean "what software to get" or do you mean "how to record"?

    if its A then there are 5 zillion threads here to answer you. (one below this thread to start with)
