I currently have a Macbook Pro running Leopard.
Every 20-30 seconds the whole computer will freeze (as if its not responding) for only 2-3 seconds. Its very annoying when watching a video, typing or doing any sort of task on the computer. Its almost as if it is perfectly timed so it doesnt matter how processor heavy the task is. Whether its typing a document or watching 1080p video.

Any ideas what it could be?

Had a similar with a XP PC a while back. it was a spyware problem.

Update your AV and runs a full system scan. Probably a key logger. Not sure tho as never had that problem with a MAC.

looks like that an old issue with HDD in macs
    Is it still on warranty?
    Do you hear Click sound?
Look into Apple support forums (but I see apple don't have proven fix for this problem)
for some replacing hDD SATA cable fix this
for some this will fix ""Put installation disc of Snow Leopard in the super drive. Restart the machine and hold down "C" untill grey logo of apple appears. You will have to wait some time for the disc to be recognized and open. Move the arrow/cursor on top of the screen and you will see the taskbar. Click on Utilities, then on Disk Utility, select your Macintosh HD, select First Aid and do Verify Disk/Repair Disk and Verify Permissions/Repair Permissions. When finish click File/Quit Disk utility and restart your machine.""
but as I said there is no proven fix to this issue so far
Good luck and don't try to fix that issue with Anti virus ;)
