took a read of the below article earlier, I was for sure voting for FG up to this point, they themselves acknowledge the damaging effects tax hikes have over spending cuts. Far too many still are not paying PAYE, welfare in alot of cases is still to generous, far too many quangos, waste and overpay in PS, duplication of services etc etc etc. Great to see FG already backing down, before they even get into goverment!

the media coverage of this is a bit of a non-story to be honest

surveys like this are all about the framing of the question

    what do people expect?

Question: would you rather pay more tax and thus have less money or see some cuts somewhere else and have the same income?

I think its obvious what people would answer

but the bottom line is that cuts and taxes are both going to happen

    Indo hype.

FG are the party most likely to go for cuts over tax hikes - always have been; Labour still bleating on about the 'vulnerable' ... i.e. middle class PS

That rag is full of pro-FF anti-FG articles.
Quick look at the stories on the top of the indo home page right now:
    * Blueshirts drop ball as they fail to boot rivals' plans into touch
    * Fine Gael must raise its game
    * Fine Gael still in poll position
    * FG's grand plan
    * 'Big' Phil lets the side down with press conference gaffe
    * Noonan long on aspiration but short on explanation
Four out of six negative on FG.

BTW Fionnan Sheehan's wife is a FF candidate Averil Power... just sayin'

Of course people want to see more cuts than taxes.

More taxes will simply be wasted away like what much of the current taxes are.

The huge excess and waste in every aspect of public spending needs to be tackled through massive cuts, and they need to be targeted cuts, not just simply a reduction in gov departments overall budget.

Welfare rates are still staggeringly high for many benefits and the like of RA cost us all more by keeping an artificial and high floor to the rent market, the HSE needs to be dealt with, finally removing all the excess and redundant support staff that should have happened when the health boards were combined. Tax systems need to be simplified and streamlined to remove costly admin work to run them, etc etc etc

What a load of crap. FG are the party that has been calling for more cuts than taxes all along, Lab want it to be 50-50 and SF want more taxes. So FGs policy has been shown to be favoured by the electorate in a poll and yet the indo has managed to turn that against FG!

Also, it takes about FG "scrapping" NewEra and other policies. They have just had to adjust them because they were prepared before the last budget and now have to be ammend them to reflect the post-budget situation. Some of the plans have had to be scaled back as a result of the budget FF implimented, yet this is FGs fault? All parties pre-budget plans have changed as a result of the budget expect for FF because it was they who controlled the budget and therefore could plan for post-budget. Everybody else has had to make changes to their pre-budget plans because the situation has changed as a result of the budget they had no control over.

Lab also released a new plan yet they are not making a "U-turn". It is obvious who the pro-FF indo see as their biggest threat.

Like you asking people can we take money out of you pocket
Such a question to ask in a poll

So 'SF want more taxes'? I would appreciate, what kind of taxes we are talking about. As far as I know, it's about introducing a Wealth Tax, which is more than fair, considering FF let those on low incomes suffer until now and no real sign, FG would change that.

This should be shouted form the rooftops.

Also people should remember that after the election the sheehan/power household will be without the €100,000 a year taxpayer funded salary ms power is currently on in her position as policy advisor to mary hannafin.

Now why does that make me think we can't rely on any objectivity from the indo political editor ?

I am not allowed discuss …

This article is utter hogwash from the Pro-FF media. Yet more FG bashing if you ask me
Fianna Fail Limerick West TD Niall Collins reacted yesterday to Mr Kenny's "swift and premature exit" from yesterday's news conference at the party's Dublin election headquarters as journalists attempted to ask further questions.

He said it showed that Mr Kenny's handlers wanted to restrict his exposure to hard questioning.

"Fine Gael seems to believe that providing soundbites will suffice in the run-up to the election. I can assure them that this is not, and will not be, the case," he said.

It was pointed out on the Late Debate last night that the reason Enda left so swiftly was because he arrived late, and this f*cked up his schedule. He had to get out quickly so as not to fall behind schedule.

It's amazing how FF still think the meejia are again' them - they're like the Republicans in the US - convinced they are the underdog and the lamestream media are against them - even thought they control the media that isn't objective
