THE FIRST of what is likely to be several debates between the leaders of Ireland’s three main political parties is to take place next Tuesday, after Fianna Fáil said it was preparing to send leader Micheál Martin into TV3′s debate – regardless of whether Enda Kenny chose to attend or not. FF said discussions on the debate were in their “final stages” and that they expected other debates to be arranged in the coming days.

It doesn't appear there's much information as of yet.

EDIT: TV3's online TV guide hasn't been updated either, so no time as of yet, although I'd assume it would be some time between the soaps and Vincent Brown to suit the ratings, so 8 or 9pm.

Looking at their line up on Tuesday, they have Emmerdale running until 8pm and then three hour long programmes in a row that can all be cancelled.

In order to gain maximum exposure, I'd say they'll push for an 8pm start - RTE 9 News will have to cover it and it gives plenty of time for the newspapers to write up reviews on it.

Has Enda made any comment yet?

Apparently Enda and VB don't get on, anyone know why?

    Why only 3 way?

We don't need to hear from the Mickey Mouse parties, so I assume it'll just be FG, Labour and SF.

If its about who can realistically expect to be Taoiseach it should be a one way :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭SB-08

Vinnie said if Enda doesn't show up there will be an empty chair in represent FG. ;)

Vinnie will be chairing the debate and then I assume analyse it with a panel on his show afterwards.

Maybe they should do two debates - FG FF & Lab one night, then SF, Greens and other assorted pondlife the next?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭PomBear

It's a bit silly as SF have every chance of having more TDs than FF after the election and for 5 ways, surely, ULA will be bigger than the Greens?

Totally agree. In relation to the other boarder above re: pondlife. I think FF as we have seen through the years would me more suited to that tag.

Sorry but you're very wrong. FF are pondscum not pondlife. Life sort of moves around.

TV3 should have the bottle to exclude FF as a minority party and have FG, Labour and SF if its to be a 3 way debate.

    Capital idea!

Leave FF on RTE by themselves, where they belong and won't get asked any hard questions that might hurt their feelings.

When I was young I used to aspire to participate in a 3-way. But then you grow up and develop politically and realise a 5-way is the only way to experience it.

I happened to tune into Pat Kenny just after 11 this morning and there he was talking to Lenny ( it seems every time I tune in to the radio or RTE its FF who are on ) and Lenny saying about FG/Labour figures do not add up blah blah, and then he goes on about the increase in exports. It was Pat Kenny's chance to say to Lenny exports of people emigrants to be accurate as well, but he said nothing. The RTE bias is beyond belief

Wait til you see the Late Late the week before polling day, if it's anything like the one with Harris, Waters and Dunphy, it'll be eye-gouging, vomit inducing, throw-the-whiskey-bottle-at-the-TV á la Father Jack stuff.

Of course, FF will get their way kicking and screaming.

I presume it's preferred to only have two parties ganging up on you than to have four people all telling you what an idiot you've been.

Especially when you play up to differences in the other parties as your retaliation ammo.

Martin will do a good job of pulling back support. It's hilarious, but by the time election time comes around FF will get 20 - 25% of the votes imo. I lost faith in this country and it's people a long time ago...

might be a blessing in disguise for SF being left out, debates like this rarely do a campaign any good, as they're merely a chance for the opposition to pick holes in your policies

Interestingly, it seems the vast majority of voters would rather see a five-way leaders' debate:
Voters back Enda Kenny bid for five-way TV debate
    Thursday, 3 February 2011

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny is winning public support for his insistence on a five-way debate including the main party leaders.

Some 69pc of voters believe the televised debates should be held between the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, the Green Party and Sinn Fein, today's Irish Independent/Millward Brown Lansdowne opinion poll reveals.

Mr Kenny wants a five-way "inclusive" encounter rather than a debate with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.

But that has prompted accusations he is "running scared" of heavyweight debaters by opting for a group instead.

While 63pc of Fine Gael supporters would agree to a five-way debate, some 69pc of Labour supporters have taken Mr Kenny's side.

Predictably, 90pc of Sinn Fein supporters want a five-way debate, while Fianna Fail supporters are split.

Overall, just 24pc of those surveyed agreed with Fianna Fail and Labour's preference for a three-way debate between Mr Gilmore, Mr Kenny and Mr Martin.

Behind the scenes, Fine Gael has been negotiating with TV stations for two five-way leader debates.

There will be plenty of both three way and five way debates during the campaign.

In other countries, the largest parties out of the current parliament go together in a head on debate - it should be no different here.

RTE are being left out in the cold on the debates :D

Also TV3 will have the 3 way on Tuesday moderated by Vinnie and then a 5 way on Feb 18th which will be a joint TV3/Sky News production, chaired by both Ursala Halligan and Adam Boulton. So this way Enda get's his wish for a 5 way and Martin and Gilmore get their wish for a 3 way. Everyone is happy. Except Enda of course who apparently has an issue with Vincent Browne chairing the debate on Tuesday.

The ULA isn't a political party with one leader to represent them in the leader's debates so there's no way for them to be included.

According to RTE Enda Kenny is refusing to appear on the debate if Vincent has anything to do with it. Michael Martin said Enda should not fear Vincent. :D

Just heard it on the news that Enda won't take part if Vinnie is involved for personnal reasons. What happened? Did Vinnie takes his toys or are FG afraid he might get him flustered?

They should get a cardboard cutout of Enda for the debate.

Maybe it has something to do with fact Browne said "Kenny should take a bottle of whiskey and a revolver into a dark room" around the time of the leadership heave.

I don't know about anyone else around here, but personnally I wouldn't be too happy with someone that said that about me.

I think Kenny is more restrained than I, as I would attend and then proceed to lamp the windbag.

Now that would really get his ratings up. :D

I don't think Browne has been happy with Fine Gael since they spurned him.
Thankfully at least he didn't turn into harris.

Actually sometimes I don't think Browne likes anyone bar himself?

I am not allowed discuss …

Sadly as it stands FIna Fail are currently the largest party in the country! By Dail Seats

Was going to vote for both Fina Gael Candidates in my area but after todays Enda show in relation to the debates I will not be voting for them now

The revolver comment is just something Kenny is hiding behind. A politician should be more thick skinned than that - and besides Kenny should have gone for the sake of the party at that time. Its been a series of lame excuses in order to avoid the debate. First he wanted a 5 way in order to deflect attention from himself and dilute his talking time, now the excuse is he has a problem with Vincent. This must be a first for politics - a leader of a party shunning free TV time in the run up to an election. Not just an ordinary election - but one he expects to win.

Kenny is afraid Vincent will maul him, he has been particularly poor on live TV and is afraid of a Nixon - Kennedy moment.

Not sure Browne would be too great as the moderator; He is prone to interupting too much and his tendency to stutter wouldnt be great...

I can see Enda's point of view. But If I was him, I would revert my decision now saying "I have made my point and I am going to take part in the debate to ensure fair representation of the parties". Something along those lines.... It really is a bit of an own goal for TV3 if their debate just involves FF & Labour...
