Just noticed this was discussed on Tuesday. Here is the text from the Dail website.
Minister for Justice and Law Reform (Deputy Brendan Smith): Information on Brendan Smith Zoom on Brendan Smith The Memorandum of Understanding on Specific Economic Policy Conditionality related to the EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support to Ireland includes a commitment to legislate for the appointment of an independent regulator of the legal profession. My Department is currently considering the implications of this commitment, if any, for the appointment of the Legal Services Ombudsman, the recruitment process for which, is well underway

First I've heard of this new ombudsman. Anyone know exactly what his/her mandate is intended to be?

    * To issue a glossy multipage annual report at a press conference with free wine and nibbles,

*To maintain an office with a couple of secreteries/receptionists

*To deal with cranks that the law society/Bar Council have told to piss off

*To write letters to the law society/bar council every so often which these two bodies have to politely pretend to care about

*To charge the bar council/law society through a levy the cost of the above

And im seriours, it is that ridiculous, classic case of wanting to appear to do something while accomplishing nothing, and since the state wont be funding the office the government doesnt care.

The current system has zero credibility and something needs to be done, i guess vested interests will probally do there best to discredit any proposals unless they can control it.

Which of what I have said is inaccurate?

Have a read of the act itself

Disciplinary procedures will still be the responsibility of the relevant professional bodies, the ombudsman is just supposed to "oversee it", whatever that means.

Please don't state that I am discrediting a proposal because I have some sort of vested interest.

It has zero credibility with professionals too though.

I'm not having a go at you, I'm merely stating that something needs to be done to give people confidence in it's complaints procedure, I don't care what they call it as long as it can operate effectively.

This I very much agree with, I have little confidence that the legal system is well regulated and if this gives me and many others the confidence in it so be it!
