Ruling due in the summer - they usually follow the advocates advice apparently.
    Thumbs up.

Hopefully this will be the start of the unravelling of Sky's rip-off pub prices! Mind you this could also work the other way, I fear. All the other broadcasters could raise their prices.:eek::eek:

I imagine the days of English audio on Premier League games from foreign providers are over.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. When I watch sport, I want to watch the sport, not listen to commentators. A feed with no running commentary would be an improvement over current feeds in my opinion.

i fear that it will become a bidding war in a pan european sale of rights and most will be priced out leading to less channels showing matches and still high prices with the fadct that until now it was sold on a country by country basis - some countries a lot cheaper than others and hence cheaper card packages in those countries

It wouldn't bother me either, currently I watch with Polish commentary, but there are some people here who were not pleased when Sky Italia went Italian only.

rights-holders might clamp down more on cards going abroad or push for tighter beams (e.g. ka sat) - so this could be bad news

That's the whole point, if Murphy wins her case the rights holders won't be allowed to clamp down on cards going abroad. They do now, but it would be allowed under EU Law if the Court follows the advocates advice. As for pushing for tighter beams, I think the various rights holders would be very small fish in that pond. If narrow beams become the norm, it will be for other reasons, and will or (hopefully) will not happen regardless as to the decision of the Court.

Narrow beams will mainly be for financial reasons in most of Europe.

Re the foreign commentary: If you were actually at a live match you would get no commentary.
Just pretend that the foreign voices from the screen are loud spectators beside you, ignore them, and all will be hunky dory in armchair football world. Make your own noise.:D
Do you pay more attention to the actual game or the commentators?

Albania is outside the EU so I imagine that they wont be covered.

Maybe not, but who is going to be checking? They check now because any supplier other than Sky UK is banned as far as they are concerned, and there are quite a few. But if they lose the court case, most will be allowed, meaning a much smaller number will still be banned, so it wouldn't really be worth their while. The cost of checking would far out way any benefit they would achieve.

The FA Sells the rights not $ky, and the FA will be in profit no matter what happens. This will give $ky a kick in the arse and review their prices, Publicans are been asked to pay stupid amounts to $ky (extorsion) in my view. Pubs cant afford this anymore and are looking for an alternative.
$ky has just been to greedy for far too long, Pubs are going bust all over ireland at the moment and for $ky to be asking those subscription rates is just a joke. Not to mention the thousands of sky subscribers all over europe and beyond,

The FA Talk about attendence numbers at the gates being affected? If i was living neer my supported team in the uk i would be at the match and not in my living room or at the pub. If gate numbers are affected then it could have something to do with "Sam Allardyce style and ticket prices".

About 3pm matches and the blackout period,
Arent the FA very selective about what games are being shown during this period, ie, how often would ManU kick off @3pm

In my opinion $ky are just another foreign operator distributing their viewing cards in Ireland, Not to mention the revenue that the state is missing out on with VAT, It's a lot of lolly that this country could do with at the moment but thats another story :)

Sky *ARE* a foreign operator. They just happen to market here.

If sky want all their cake and to be eating it, why dont they do something about the 1000's of pubs in the European holiday resorts showing their broadcasts?

so if the murphy case is successful (and it looks very likely it will) how will foreign broadcasters be able to monitor illegal usage of their services. while sky have been able to keep tabs on pubs that might be illegally showing their channels, won't it be absolutely impossible for Nova (as an example) to monitor if their cards are being used illegally in a country such as Ireland.

They are a foreign operator in that respect, but they have one thing the others don't - official premission from the FA Premier League to broadcast their games in the Republic of Ireland. For which they have paid a substantial sum. Under EU law they can't be prohibited from broadcasting and marketing in Ireland or indeed purchasing sporting rights for this territory. Nor would we want to either. Cash from Sky is a major source of funding for the game of rugby union at professional level in this country, after all.

The reason Manchester United don't kick off at 3pm is that their games are natually often picked for TV coverage, and of course they can't show a game kicking off at 3pm in the UK. As I recall, Sky Sports have the first picks followed by ESPN. Setanta have 1 game from whatever is left after that. There are quotas incidently which apply to Sky and ESPN (but seemingly not Setanta) as to how often teams can be featured.
