Classified device for electronic intelligence gathering. As part of Bord Snip nua, Aer Lingus aircraft will be used for bth passenger carrying and military intelligence. Technicians will sit in the first 3 rows. RyanAir are keeping their first 3 rows empty in case they get the gig too.

The "White Lump" is the SATCOM antenna.

Ryanair never block off the 1st three rows. Think youll find it rows 3 and 4 or 3 to 8 depending on passenger numbers.

Was this in some other area on the older models then moved on top?.It doesn't seem to be on the older ones

    EI-JFK

EDIT:It's so passengers can use cell phones and email sms etc....as well as long range communication between pilots and controllers
The CMC Electronics CMA-2102SB high-gain satcom antenna has been certified on the A380 and A330/340. The new-generation antenna supports Inmarsat Aero-H+, Swift64 and SwiftBroadband services and is intended for installation atop the fuselage.

Inmarsat mobile satellite service enables long-range, oceanic communications between pilots and controllers as well as e-mail, SMS messaging and phone-calling services for passengers on some airlines. CMC also announced here at the Paris Air Show that its integrated cockpit for the Hawker Beechcraft T-6B military trainer has been certified by Transport Canada.

The firm will start delivering the new avionics in the fourth quarter.

Simple answer to this...the older 330's didnt actually have SATCOM installed, thus no Antenna visible. (older a/c i mean EI-JFK, ORD,SHN,CRK). You will see on EI-LAX it has a different set up and a different type Antenna...Its not on top of the fuselage as it is on the newer aircraft but instead its on the sides. If you check the following link out http://www.airliners.net/photo/Aer-Lingus/Airbus-A330-202/0791086/L/&sid=975b0643f7dfb8dab8f189ea3df13fcf There is no White Antenna on top of fuselage, but instead its on the sides. A lot harder to see this, but if you look at the AER LINGUS, on the i and n there is a square that is slightly raised. Its difficult enough to see but i assure you it is there. Exact same on the other side of fuselage also. This houses the Beam Steering Units on this particular SATCOM System on LAX.

Maybe not with the current fleet, but the one time I did fly Ryanair many moons ago, it was 'anywhere you want except the first three'
