Anybody drink a whey protein based drink after training?

If so could you recommend me one please. Will have a snoop around a few shops later and scope a few online stores but any recommendations would be great thanks.

That was my next question. I take it unflavoured whey tastes gank!

    Bulkpowders.co.uk or myprotein.co.uk

I buy unflavoured and add mi-wadi and water to it or if I'm feeling kind to myself some cocoa and sugar (or sweetener) for a choc shake. Works out incredibly cheap by comparison.

Little known fact: It's actually better for protein synthesis to take the whey before training. Great post here. :)

Cheers, I'm actually more interested in it to satisfy my hunger post training.

Fair enough. For that maybe consider cottage cheese instead (or even just milk if you're not worried about the carbs). Whey is absorbed very quickly by the body. Cottage cheese contains casein protein which is digested much slower.

Anyone tried oats in whey shake for carbs + protein? I usually have mine on the to the pool in the mornings, could probably do with getting some carbs in earlier.

I am thinking, blend up the oats very small mix with milk... in the fridge over night and they throw the whey in the next morning.

I tried that. Better to soak the oats overnight in the fridge and blend them the next day or it can be a bit bitty.

Just starting trainin for hopefully my first triathlon, starting off with light training but also doing some weights about 2 times a week. Question i have is would i get any benefit from using whey protein ? Also i see it is available in holland and barrett shops if one did not want to purchase it online.

I mix unflavoured whey with a fruit smoothie. 2 passions fruits almost over ride the taste of the whey...and probably rot your teeth but I love my passion fruit!

I haven't tried the oats, but I definitely second the idea of fruit usually banana and / or kiwi.

I only take a protein shake after a tough session when solid food isn't too appealing.

I recently started taking a whey protein shake post training and so far have found it to be beneficial towards recovery and curbing my appetite.

Had heard that some shakes are vile but was pleasantly surprised with this shake in the choc mint flavour. It is delicious and I always look forward to downing the next one.

    No connection to myprotein.

I'm interested in taking this as well post training, as I'm a guy who probably has about a stone to lose is it a bad idea to take a protein whey shake?

The H&B stuff isn't great. In general athletes benefit from having more protein than the average punter, but you don't need to get it from whey. It could be chicken, or eggs, or something else.

Some protein after working out will help with recovery. It doesn't have to be whey. Personally I prefer to eat something instead of drinking it if I'm trying to lose bodyfat.

Protein will have some calories, but will help with recovery (allowing you to train more frequently / harder). It's a bit of a trade off.

Sunwarrior organic protein. A number of the runners in our club are starting to use it and really feeling the benefits. Sold by La Sante Health Food Store in Dun Laoghaire (in the shopping centre, opposite Tesco on teh bottom floor). I've been using whey protein for a while but will be starting on this next week.

$48 for 1 kg of that stuff?
I think I'll pass and wait for the next fad

If you are gonna buy whey protein you might as well go Irish, few people realise but Glanbia are actually once of the largest sport nutrition producers in the world (whey being a by product of cheese production). Optimum and BSN are two of the better known Glanbia brands.

Kinetica, a relatively new Irish company, as well have a range of protein based drinks which are worth trying.

There are different 'qualities' of whey but they are essentially do the same job and any of the stuff above would be at the higher end of the quality scale. Obviously being Irish you'll have to pay a bit more for them but...

if you're looking for a decent ready protein shake. I use provon revive when I'm on the go, use it for back to back LSR's and ultras and am able to get good runs in the next day/two days later.

As a person who trains almost 50 - 50 running / weights (on alternative nights)

Would i benefit from taking protein?

My situation is I am pondering taking a shake 1 or 1.5hr before training, as I feel like im running on empty sometimes because going straight from work etc, so taking a shake here would be good i think?

Then post session, should I take another shake to aid recovery, or just pass on it, considering i usually eat about an hour later?

I am not interested in gaining bulk, just not burning muscle instead of fat, and also easing the aches in my legs / other muscles after training.

I use the herbalife F1 shakes [protein and 120 odd vitamins and minerals], sometimes with their own protein powder as an extra, sometimes not.

I think u should definately use a recovery drink after training but make sure it contains some carbs aswell because that what u need. The perfect ratio is 3:1 carbs to protein

I use recovery xs from my protein it also includes an electrolyte blend, 2 scoops nd 500ml of water nd the strawberry is quiet nice!!!

I use High5 Protein Recovery and without a doubt I've noticed improved recovery from sessions. I use the chocolate one with half LF milk half water for intense 60-90 mins workouts, and all milk for 2hrs+.

How often do people use the shakes? I take mainly after a long bike, LSR or high intensity turbo, so 2-3 times a week. I've been thinking using a shake after intense swimming? Also anyone use more than 1 shake a day?

If u doing aerobic or anaerobic training at least once a day it is advisable to take a 4:1 Carb to protein blend to replace lost sugar & aid muscle repair all part of recovery within the recovery window which is the period of time you trained for after you finish....for example if you trained for an hour you have another hour to get this stuff in to you. Some examples that do a 4:1 blend..are High 5...or Accelerade...available on Chain reaction or wiggle.
