    Hi all,
I am in the market for a new PC this year. Plan to purchase hopefully in May timeframe ( ie after intel have the sandybridge issues ironed out).

    I want to
    - Edit photos
    - play Call Of Duty & similar
    - 60-100GB C:\ drive , 500GB primary data drive, 500GB backup.
    - Last for 8 years
    - Interested in a bit of tweaking but I am not an overclocker
    - full tower size case is OK but must be reasonably quiet.

    No interest in
    - XLI/crossfire
    - loud, bright/shiny cases
    - hi-fidelity sound, just OK sound is fine.
    - Blu ray. ( I think BLu-ray is the new SACD...)

    Want
    - fast USB + esatap externals, easily accessible
    - not noisy

    Now,
    Dell are looking for 1159 for an XPS8300 (i7-2600, 6GB,1.5TB, radeon HD5770).

I love the case but think the disk is too big & the GPU too small..So.

    My recipe for disaster is

    I5 2500K.......................................100W...........eu 212
    Arctic cooling freezer 7 Rev 2............020W..........eu 020
    ASUS P8P67Pro..............................150W...........eu 165
    Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800 4GB............040W..........eu 047
    Radeon 6870..................................250W..........eu 210
    SUBTOTAL.....................................550W..........eu 654

    Allow 100W & eu200 for HDs & a basic DVD R/W drive

    ...................................................650W...........eu854

    Add 25%

    ...................................................850W...........eu854
    Corsair 850W PSU..............................................eu158

    TOTAL.............................................................eu1012

To me, this looks lovely so far ...BUT

    - Need Win 7 home premium eu 100
    - a case...........................eu 100

I am completely new to building...

. Dont want to overclock but like flexibility to manage performance
    - Want to be futureproof to say 5-8 years out

Monitor, KB, Mouse, card reader etc...am OK, trying to keep the CPU to eu1000.

If you have made it this far, congrats!!!

    My Questions are:

    - Am I approximately on the right track?
    - Can I knock off any cost here w/o sacrificing performance hugely?
    - What is a well made case, quiet, with audio, USB, ESATAp available on top/in front?

    Thanks!!
    -FoxT

may wait till closer to may to plan it out mate more new cpu's are gonna hit the markest soon plus other cpu's are due to go down in price but we can still spec on out for a laught tho ;)

First off i'd wait until you're ready to buy before settling on which parts to get. Sandy Bridge is a no-no anyway at the moment, should be grand by may though.
Two things to wait for, that could be game changing.
    1. Bulldozer may or may not be released before the summer.
    2. Sandy Bridge "z" chipset (could have overclocking features of "p" and igp of "h" chipsets combined.

superneat is completely right plus a case size dosn't matter what so ever when it comes to noise the fans is what you want to worry about large fans = les rpm = less noise and cheap fans = noisey as hell.
anyways while i couldnt agree with superneat anymore i still went and specced one out anyways XD but i did go €130 over budget plus i chose a corsair 750 watt rather than a 850 watt cause your not gonna need that much power for a single card set up however i did choose one of the quietest case on the market =D

    I DONT EVEN-

Where on earth did you get those power consumption figures from??!?:P

My favourite is in red... 150W for the chipset??!?!?!?!!? :pac:

Could do worse than this comes in under budget with 70 to spare for another hard drive and a cooler or something like that. (Case out of stock at the moment mind)

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful!

Actually, I think I am not too demented here.... see here for example:

    http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1500/15/

I am allowing 290W for the processor & motherboard, they are seeing a draw of about 200W... So I am a bit low - no harm having a bit of margin!

    cheers

Those figures are the power draw for the entire system as measured from the socket, so it is all components not just processor and motherboard. In fact allowing for power lost through PSU inefficencies the actual components are using even less than that again.

I was thinking afterwards if you are absolutely certain you will never be overclocking an i5-2500 rather than the i5-2500K would also shave a about 30 euro off the price of the build.

I was wrong about this....& you & Solitaire are right - I think this is more realistic... BTW I made the same mistake when I was looking for power figures for the Radeon - it was total sys power, not card power, duh. Thanks for pointing that out.

So anyway, I am now at

    I5 2500K.......................................100W...........eu 212
    Arctic cooling freezer 7 Rev 2............010W..........eu 020
    ASUS P8P67Pro................................50W...........eu 165
    Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800 4GB............010W..........eu 047 /*not sure */
    Radeon 6870..................................125W..........eu 210
    SUBTOTAL.....................................295W..........eu 654

Allow an extra 150W for hard drives, network card, fans, general headroom - 450W

So a 450W to 550W PSU will cut it? Thats a saving of eu70.... great!

    Thx

If you are trying to find the correct wattage psu go here
    http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Try to aim for something between 30% and 50% more than the recommended, so that the psu would be using the optimal amount (between 20% & 80% at full load)
