Amsterdam isn't heavy on attractions. I find it is more of a city to stroll around and discover rather than ticking off the major attractions.

There are of course the usual suspects, Anne Frank House, The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Red Light District (all worth a visit), Heineken Brewery, Flower Market, Madame Tusauds, Artis Zoo (none of which are fab).

The Jordaan area is Amsterdam at its best. It's within 5 min walk of Dam square, quirky shops, boutiques, deli's, small dark little bars and good restaurants. It's also Amsterdam at its most picturesque.

You can purchase a 24hr multi journey Tram ticket onboard for €7.00 and it's worth getting one.

Everything's fairly central in the dam but the place is an absolute maze after a few drinks and a trip to a coffee shop. Its a great city to wander around in, though.

buy yourself a map and you should be fine if your staying around dam square.its pretty central to everything, the streets are very narrow so its easy to get lost.
if you like to smoke i recommend a day trip to haarlem its only 20 mins on the train(dam sq is 5 mins walk from central station)the smoke is top quailty and about 25% cheaper than amsterdam

I would not advise hiring a bike. You really need to know what your doing, sounds crazy cause it is only a bike, but, the locals either on other bikes or cars do not suffer fools gladly. No bikes - top tip.
