Hi all, this is'nt a concern/issue first of all just a queery.
I have a 3 year old staff and a good frind of mine who has a bitch staff asked if mine would do her the privelage of mating with her when she came into season, so i agreed. When it came to them actually doing the business he showed no interest whatsoever !! we left them play etc for a few hours and still nothing, Max (my fella) has never really shown any signs that he is interested in any bitch, we have another terrier bitch at home and again he has never attempted to do anything with her either. Just curious are their plenty of dogs that show no interest ??
It does'nt bother me in any way i just presumed he may even attemp to mate

Likely is if he doesn't want to breed theres an underlined reason. Breeding is not something you should decide to do ''just like that'' especially with staffs- most of the dogs being put to sleep in pounds are staff type dogs. There are enough of them in the pound. If you're going to breed, you should do it to improve the breed, through showing or working and making sure your dog is healthy by health testing. Good luck.

Appreciate your reply however i was'nt sitting at home bored and just decided out of the blue to continue the worsening problem that already exists with abandoned pups/dogs !! I merely asked if it was a common issue with dogs not wanting to mate ?? And just to set the record straight the reason we were trying to breed both dogs is we have very good homes for the litter if conceived. I am a mature person/dog owner and understand the issues, i have had lots of dogs for the last 30 years and this was the first attempt !!

As far as your question goes I've read that breeders who have dogs that won't mate usually they won't use them in their breeding programs because it usually indicates underlined problems, as to what I don't know as I don't breedI do hope to show one day though.. . Maybe ask your vet?
I would advise you read up on this before they tie the knot, so to speak!

Good luck, and btw, I love staffies! I just think there are too many in danger for inexperienced people without mentorship( guidance from an experienced breeder) to be breeding them :( so many people throw two dogs together without researching the pedigrees health and temperment first, I'm not saying you're doing that, but a LOT of people do (even my parents did!)

The bitch might not have been ready for him so he wasnt interested. Do you know what day of her season she was on?
If she isnt on the right day then he wont mate with her as its not the right time.
Ive a pup in season at the moment and my male has been used for stud before and he knows shes not ready yet so isnt showing an interest but i still keep them separated at all times.
Shes on day 10 today so its anytime from around day 12 that she is full on in season so im preparing myself for a week of crying, howling, panting etc. My dog might have to go to my parents for a few days if he gets really stressed.

If he is not an experienced dog it is unusual that he is not showing any interest. From experience these dogs usually have an underlying conditon. Our own stud dogs don't show any interest until the bitches have reached their prime breeding days which can vary from day 9 until day 15. The best day is usually around day 12 but it can vary. Of course if the first signs of heat are missed then it is possible to get the days wrong.

Almost all male dogs show interest unless something is wrong so if you don't have any luck, I would be asking my vet to run a check of his blood. The last dog I seen this happen with was diagnosed with Addison's disease but there could be numerous other reasons.

I have a neutred male at home and when one of the bitches is receptive, I have to keep them apart as even he wants go have a go!

I agree with Knine. Any entire male should be interested in some way with a bitch in heat. I remember the first time my male was used for stud, the minute he saw the bitch he was straight onto her wanting to mate so he knew exactly what to do.

Your friend could have his days wrong with the bitch but if shes in heat in and around the right time, your dog should def have some sort of interest for sure.

Yep I too have a neutered male who was neutered 5 years ago but will still have a go when my bitch is in heat.
I'd have this dog examined by a vet for an underlying cause, it's very unusual for a male not to show any interest whatsoever in a receptive female.

Thanks for all the replies, my little terrier at home was spayed when we first got her so no worries there. The only time i've seen Max have a vague interest in trying to mate is when Petal (terrier) comes home from the groomer with a new scent !! I am going to make an appointment with the vet just to ensure he is ok however. I've had 5 or 6 males in the past and they've been very active this way but Max really does'nt show much interest at all. Someone else also pointed out to me recently that when Petal snaps at Max for attempting to mount her this may have a psychological effect on him with other bitch's?? may sound silly but could it be possible

No, not really, as a bitch who is in season will want to be mated, and will stand for the dog and his instinct will take over and he will be in control of the situation and want to mate her.
Petal wouldnt be in season and he knows this so he wouldnt be getting the scent off her being in season so its a different situation altogether. Plus you said hes never tried to anything with her, well thats because she has never been in season as shes spayed so he wouldnt want/need to do anything with her.
When a bitch is in season entire males will do anything to try and mate with a bitch who is anywhere near him.

Thanks andreac, clears things up a bit. As stated in another post it may be possible then that Milly (friends staff) may not have been in heat fully. I'll get Max to the vet either way and see what the outcome is. We dont have a lot of bitches around us here and Max has never really socialised with any apart from Petal in the last 3 years.

Do you know what day she is on in her heat? Its usually from day 12 or so that they are ready to be mated.
My bitch is on day 10 at the mo and my male isnt showing too much interest bar sniffing and licking her, he hasnt tried to hump her yet, but they are separated when i am not around as any time from now on she could get pregnant if he mated with her.

Sorry i should have stated this happened before Xmas, but from what i can remember she was coming into full heat between 12 and 14 days, Max would have been there on the 12th day for approx 2 hours. She was literally showing herself to him and inviting him but it was like he did'nt know what to do. We left them together first for approx 40 mins but Max was more interested in sniffing anything but Milly

Ah right ok, but trust me, he would know what to do:D

My fella knew the instant the bitch arrived to my house, when he was used for stud, there was no stopping him, lol. Even now, when he sees the owner of the bitch it reminds him of her, ha.

Yes i would have thought so too thats what got me kind of worried the fact that he did'nt even want to try. Its not the end of the world though he is a very happy dog and i've never had a mins trouble with him (apart from his dewclaws) If he never bred it would'nt bother me in the slightest, i was just curious really
