Battery life is really bad on HTC desire

Battery life is really bad on the HTC desire. I even went and bought a 2nd batter and I'm still having the same problem. I rarely have wifi or bluetooth on or even 3g and I'm still getting about half a day. I've rooted my phone and I'm guessing this is the main reason.

If anyone knows a way to make your battery better I would really appreciate the info

    Thanks

You have something installed which is draining the battery quicker than it should.
How many widgets do you have installed on your homescreen, and what level is your brightness at?

If you dont have the brightness set to Automatic, then I suggest you do change it. The brightness is a killer for me. Oh, and having the Wifi on when you are not connected or near/using a wifi connection is gonna kill your battery. Constantly having the Desire search for a Wifi connection destroys my battery. I can lose 25% of my battery in just over an hour with the phone on standby in my pocket with the wifi on during work.
With the wifi off under the same conditions it can take it 6 hours to drop that 25%.

Saw an app that turns of your wifi when you move out of range of your selected wifi, check Android market

Think it's called Juice Defender. I tried it out the other day for a full day and found that the battery was almost just as bad. Tasker is another app that lets you make up rules that govern what turns on/off and when. But I have heard great things about it these apps though. So, they are deffo worth a try and see what works for you best.

Have you checked what has been draining the battery in Settings -> About Phone -> Battery
You can see here whats been going on I'm sure

Sounds as though you installed it but haven't configured it. If your wifi is off then is your 3G connection taking over as it sounds as though your wifi signal is weak or you have some apps going through a lot of data synchronization.

The main battery killler is poor network signal.
If the signal is poor at home or work, the phone will boost power (3-4 times the regular power) to the antenna to try and get better signal.
    Huge drain on the battery.

I almost have my one plugged in constantly. Plugged in now as I post from it. I do use it nonstop though for interweb and games.

OP, since you're already rooted, you could try update the radio baseband on the device.

I'm running Gingervillain with radio 32.49.00H_5.11.05.27 for about 2 weeks now and it's the best i've ever seen my battery perform. Right now it's been running for 13h 56m with approx 60%-70% left (sync on always, bt/wifi only when needed, brightness about 30%)

I'm not sure what's happened with mine.... I usually get a day at most out of it. Maybe a day and a half. But when I went to bed last night I noticed that it still had 80% power. And sure enough now, 1 day, 1 hour 54 minutes since it was unplugged it's happily ticking along at 70% battery life. Odd, but I won't complain!

OP, do you have background Data on? I generally unplug mine in the morning, and need to plug it in at night. What I have done to do this:

    Removed Background Data
Ensured the GTalk was not set to automatic sign in (is by default)
Turned off Vibrate/Bluetooth/Wifi, unless I need it.
Have all of my email/facebook etc to manually sync.
Set the screen off to 10 seconds
    Reduced my processor to 844Mhz
Have my processor drop to 245Mhz when the screen is off
Rooted and removed Sense (LeeDroid Froyo 2.2)

Try how you get on with all but the bottom three.

Generally I would have wifi on. The system is what is draining the battery the most. I might try upgrading the raidio version. Does anyone have any links. My device is unbranded and unlocked. Thanks again.

I used to have the same problem. I was on 2.1 rooted. When I put on LeeDroid the battery life got significantly better, I get a day at least now

    try here

apparently the latest one isn't great for battery life, 32.49. . . should do the trick

Is there any easy guide to do this using a Mac. The last time I did this, I was using a PC.

    Thanks

my mac knowledge would be rusty at best but i don't imagine it should be too different. download the file, move it to the root of the sd card in the phone, start the phone in recovery mode, flash the file

if that's too simplistic of a description, i can reply in more detail a bit later

The phone is not letting me boot into recovery mode. Keep getting the red triangle. Any suggestions ?

    Sorry about the delayed response.

Do you have rom manager? I've just had a quick look at it there for the first time and there's a few handy options in there e.g. 'boot into recovery', 'flash rom from SD card'. I assume you could use the second option there to flash the new radio file

OP can you connect your phone to the computer because it sounds just like the same problem I have. I was flashing a new ROM and USB bricked my phone and this in turn causes the battery to drain a lot quicker. I am only getting half a day out of my phone like you so I have bought a spare battery which is a pain.

I found changing my background pic from a predominantly white one to a darker one sent my battery from 12 hours to 30 hours or so.
