Loss of power while driving

    Hey lads,

Driving a 05 Corsa 1.0 at the moment, and on Monday I noticed that it seemed to be having momentary loss of power while driving (most noticeable when the accelerator pedal was even slightly released, and also when travelling above 80km/h). It is quite apparent when it happens as the car just feels like its trying to come to a complete halt, before resuming acceleration about a second later.

I brought it to a mechanic who's first thoughts were that something called a coil pack may be gone in it. It even stalled on me while I was trying to turn around in his yard. He took the car for the day and rang me later in the afternoon to say he had replaced some plugs and cleaned the fuel filter and it seemed to be driving ok. I picked it up from him, and drove it back to the house and it seemed fine.

Today, I drove from Limerick to Cork and exactly the same thing is happening again. The car is almost lurching when its doing speed or when I start slowing down to come to a halt. There doesn't seem to be any problem power wise when taking off from roundabouts or lights, but as you can imagine, its doing some serious jumping when I'm actually driving it.

Any ideas on what this could be? Mechanic has already ruled out anythign wrong with the coil pack, but is it worth my while getting a second opinion on that?

Did you mechanic not run an electronic diagnostics test on it? That would be the first thing to do. Does the MIL light come on when the problem is occurring?

Not that I'm aware of (he doesn't have the most advanced setup to be honest). The only thing that has been on has been an exhaust emission light, but he advised me this is most likely just a sensor fault and wouldn't be causing this kind of jumping from the car.

Time for a new mechanic so if that's his advice...

The emission light, as many manufacturers call it, is and engine malfunction light on modern cars and all sensors related to the running of the engine are tied into it. If any of them go faulty then the light will come on and many of the sensors, if they malfunction, will cause poor running/power loss.

You need to go to a decent recommended garage and have the problem diagnosed correctly.

Thanks for the advice man, that might be what's causing it so. I won't have time though to get to a garage again before the weekend, do you think its safe enough to drive on?

Its hard to say, depending on what the fault is it could be having an adverse effect on other parts. Try to drive it as little as possible if you can.
