Hi, I was wondering is there something wrong with my cv as basically out of of 10-12 companies, I got 1 interview. Internships are done through the department so I'm not competing against many others for the same position.

Obviously,it's formatted differently, I just threw it up like that here. As far as I can see, there's not much wrong with it. I don't have much work experience but it's relevant and the 2nd one is my dad's company.I have good grades and good achievements imo.

Is there anything,I could have put better,or done differently, or any huge errors that would have my CV thrown out straight away? It comes to 2 pages formatted btw.

Also, does anyone know any companies, preferably in Dublin area, that are offering internships?

    Hi Titan18,

First of all good luck in the interview. Unfortunately though that what the market place is like atm. Think of it like this, you are applying for an internship, no degree yet and no real experience and your up against a person with a degree and work experience who would gladly do the same job for the same wages due to unemployment and willing to take low wages to pay the mortgage, feed the family etc. Its not you, just the market place.

Why not try and do your internship abroad, have you tried that? One thing I will say is that you need to re-do your work experience. At the end of the day you need to sell yourself!!! From your experience you wrote in the credit union you may get grilled in an interview by them asking "you say you established excellent relationships in the CU, if so why are you applying here and not working there?" You need to look at what you did there differently too, it seems to come across that you photocopied paper, filed it away and had a chat. I'm don't want to be cruel but try and look at it from a critical point of view. If you compare this to stuff online for the jobs your applying too, would you hire yourself. I'm not great on programming jobs so maybe talk to a lecturer or careers office about that and get a look at your friends CV, because essentially they are the competition and you need to know what your up against...

As for theoretical knowledge acquired, its not needed. What works in theory will not work in practice. Might be an idea to check e-financial careers for that. Your achievements and interests are impressive. The karate shows discipline and focus with entrepeneurial talent from the website. However, try and show more interpersonal and leadership skills. I am by no means saying that any of this will work and open to correction from others as everyone has different methods. Just my 2c

    Enjoy the hunt :D

You could be competing against other colleges too. I went for an interview for placement today thinking that there was only 7 going for it out of the class, but they are interviewing all today, all tomorrow and maybe monday, which leads me to believe theres other colleges involved too. Im doing a Masters too by the way

For a lot of the positions, they have set aside a number of roles for our course, so I'm actually only competing against my classmates.I'm only 3rd year Undergrad btw, not Masters.

Also,ya,I've applied abroad.A few US companies take interns from our course, and I had applied to them, again, with no luck.

On the work experience,I know I have nothing, and I basically asked can I work for free in the credit union nearby as it'd be slightly relevant to the area I'm studying. I didn't get any real experience out of it afterwards and what is on my cv is basically what I did.

The intern position(s) budget is the first to go when recruitment is tight. :-(

You may need to try other strategies.

    (1) Offer to work on a project completion basis, i.e. agree a project and a price.

    (2) Offer to work for free or travel + Lunch expenses.

    (3) Keep the pressure on your placement office, it's their job to get you those interviews.

Prepare for the possibility that you may not get a position.

    (3) Take further classes, learn a new skill in the placement period.

    Good Luck.

I suggest you put a profile in your CV to introduce your self and see where you are going and stating clearly the job you are applying for. The layout isn't too bad. Maybe group your skills in a paragraph suitable for the job you are applying for rather than list. Its worth looking into courses you could train up and update your skills in a certain area even self learning be enough to cover you or do a night course. Maybe voluntary work or a weekend job might be handy to have. Joining a society might be another thing you could do. What you have on it already is good enough for any graduate so your not the only one in the same boat as yourself. Even the jobs you have had and what you might do say voluntarily it be a foot in the door anyway regardless. It doesn't have to be in the area you want to work in despite your work-experience. Its interesting and shows variety. Nothing like willing to try. Be prepared for anything really in the job stakes.

    Best of luck OP

Go down to the careers service,
Apply for Every extra Job Aine sends out,
Make your own contacts and try to get a job.

You still have a bit to go, offers will still come in during and after the exams.

With respect to Irish Elec eng, don't listen to what he said, you will get placed. Might not be the best company or you might end up in UCC but don't work for free or not take a placement.
