    Hi,
I am about to apply for the Back to Education scheme. My stapms run out before the course starts. Does this mean I will receive no benefits between the time the jobseekers benefit stops and the course starts?

Jobseekers Benefit. This is paid for a max of 12 months to new claimants who would of had 260 or more paid contributions or 9 months to those who have less than 260.

After the 9 or 12 months most people would then be means tested for Jobseekers Allowance. If you are awaiting on the claim and are getting neither then you would need to attend your Local Commuinty Welfare Officer, these are usually located in your local HSE clinic. You can apply for a Basic Weekly Payment, this is also means tested. A CWO makes a decision based on the circumstances of each individual case, in other words the payment is at their own discretion.

You can always apply for JSA. Just be aware that the rate may actually be lower or you may not qualify at all if you're means-tested on either your parents' or your partner's income.

Just one thing I'd tell you to be aware of, as far as I know the BTEA rate is the same rate as your Jobseekers allowance/benefit. If they lower your welfare rate surely your BTEA will also decrease?

You need to be in receipt of a payment at the time of starting BTEA. So you should be applying for Jobseeker's Allowance if your Benefit expires before the BTEA starts. A decision has to be made on your means on JSA before any BTEA will be paid to you.
If you have reduced means on JSA, these will be disregarded while you are in receipt of BTEA - however over the summer and when the course finishes the means will apply to your payment.
