I would advise waiting as the big mobile phone event of the year is taking place in the next few days and will give a good indication of what's coming out tho when the latest and greatest hits our shores is another matter :)

would be curious about this too, want to get an android phone but don't wanna break the bank either. only reason i'd want it is wifi and free apps (mainly wifi) will check back tomorrow or the next day when the results are in and everyone has been informed :)

If you switch to billpay they're not too expensive, even on the lover priceplans. Plus you'd actually be surprised how far the mins and texts will go. Not implying you should switch, but its worth considering in case you have only been looking at pay as you go prices.

In my shoes id rather get a second hand high end phone rather than low end/mid end android phone. That little bit that their missing is whats really good about the OS. Wildfire sucks cause of the resolution.

For that range your best choice is going for ZTE Blade. You get get it in NI or UK or eBay at approx 150 euro. Its one of the best phones out there standing between low and mid end.

General advice hold on a while. Huawei are meant to be bring out a low cost decent android phone out soonish :) Should be worth the wait. Also soon all 2nd gen Android phones will show up so all the older ones with older processors will drop in price.

thought i'd give this a bump, any update on 'phones to look out for' since that trade show, also any suggestions of where to get a zte blade cause they're going about 170 180 on ebay which is a bit overpriced imo and i'd really really rather not have to deal with paypal :P

LG Optimus One, keenly priced great phone (runs Android 2.2)

Don't have experience with the other phones but don't get a Wildfire. I found it horrible trying to use it for basic functions like calling and texting etc., it would lag when I click a contact to call which would lead me to press it numerous times which then meant I rang them that many times. I'd often gave to reboot over it. The screen and overall speed of the phone is disappointing. Why don't you look on Adverts for a high-end phone? There's N1's and Desires going for cheap on there. :)

Mmm huawei x3 I think is the budget handset coming. It won't be as bad as the wildfire or zte blade but not as good as the desire.

You should just get a high end second hand. Plenty on adverts.ie

I have a Blade, and the reason I bought it over any of the others near it's price range is the screen resolution 480x800 vs 320x480 on the lg, apollo, wildfire etc.

An added bonus has been the developer interest and many custom ROMs available, and it's just gotten better with the Blade getting official support for CyanogenMod 7 (Custom Android 2.3), something none of the other phones around the same price have or are likely to get.

It's available for the Wildfire, but that's nearly twice the price and the official cyanogen developer for the Wildfire ditched it for the Blade because it's a better performing phone.

I'd either go for the Blade, wait for some reviews on the Ideos, or pony up the (probably significant) extra money and get a second hand Desire/HD/Z/ or Nexus One.

This is exactly where I was, and I went for the Xperia X8. The memory on it is squeenchy, the camera is as basic as basic can be (no GoogleGoggles, for instance :(), but for €110 from Vodafone it's exactly what I wanted and will do fine until I decide to get a bigboy phone.

It doesn't. It has a fancy autofocus camera and therefore works with GoogleGoggles. The X8 is fixed focus and therefore doesn't.

My camera phone is crapper than your camera phone :p
